This will be Sittingbourne's 8th match in this season's Trophy competition having already beaten Sutton Common Rovers, Kingstonian, Bognor Regis, Dover, Enfield and Salisbury. Winchester was their other opponent who they only drew with, but progressed on penalties.
Saturday’s match will be refereed by Andrew Humphries who is in his second season at National League level. He is a teacher from Daventry and shouldn’t be found wanting for fitness, having once completed 11 marathons in 11 days raising money for MS research.
His first previous Southend match was the home game against Eastleigh, last season, on a Friday night in August – the night of the tennis ball protest. We won 2-0 with cautions for Miley and one of theirs. I thought he had a very reasonable match.
His second Southend match was later last season at Oldham. A 1-1 draw in goals and a 1-1 draw in cards too; Hobson for them, Cardwell for us. He seemed to miss a clear penalty during that game.
His third and most recent Southend match was this season's draw at Wealdstone back in September. Our three yellows went to Ralph, Morten and Moncur; they had one.
He has benefitted more than most from the pooling of NL referees with League One and Two referees having been given four Football League matches amongst his 14 matches which have produced 47 yellow cards and 2 reds, the most recent of which was for Port Vale at Chesterfield last Saturday.
Assisting will be two regular visitors to Roots Hall, Daniel Cook from Braintree and Alex Mathieson from Aldershot. Fourth Official, with his first Southend appointment, is Tolu Sangowawa from Waltham Forest.
