Oh no it’s not.The embargo is behind you!
I’m sure know why people think embargo but everything just tallies up with living within a budget and Phil not being happy he can’t sign the player he wants which breaks the budget. Reduce the wage bill and you can sign some more, we have way too many players still just in the wrong position it seems
Ron Martin has a history of suddenly becoming difficult to track down or get hold of when he's needed to sign off on an incoming transfer. Usually happens when he has somebody else in his ear advising him to say no to the manager, and when he then hasn't got the cajones to tell that manager "no" to his face. But the comments don't suggest that at all. PB comments suggests he hasn't been told its a problem. It was more about Ron's availability which is just weird. Clearly comms issues within management of club but I'm sure the club will release a clear statement to let us know what is going on.......or maybe not.
oh yes it isOh no it’s not.
A lot of good points. The highlighted point about Ferdinand hardly playing after the 1st season is not how I remember it and Wikipedia backs up my recollection. He played 36 times in his 1st season and 35 in his 2nd season. I remember him having niggles in the second season and playing (badly) because he never had time to recover.Point taken....at least partially. Ferdinand was superb in this first season with us but after that hardly played. After that first season we were essentially paying him money for no contribution. Injury, or, loss of form, and the body no longer allowing the player to effectively compete or contribute is always a danger with older players hence the need for caution about the length of contracts.
In some ways the RH situation might have more in common with what happened with Kightly. I hope we are not offering RH a three years!
It does seem quite likely PB is pleading with Ron to go over budget hence the remarks about having to be a good salesman....if the signing was within the agreed budget why would PB need to 'sell' anything to Ron?
And the lack of funds may well be a result of being unable to move on ANG and SimAk.
If this the case Ron is not being unreasonable. In my opinion at least.
I make Ron right on RH, why take the risk on someone who showed nothing last season. I'd have loved him a few seasons back but think it's a gamble where the odds aren't in our favour at allWas meant to post an update earlier, but have been away on a stag do over the weekend and spent the day catching up with my missus and little boy.
Firstly, we are not under any embargo/squad limit size, or anything of that nature. All bills, wages, other expenditures etc are all up to date, so any talk of embargoes is nonsense.
CP beat me to part of the update with his story recently put online about the first team coach. Was a recommendation from RD, and PB liked what he heard and the coach like what he saw at training Friday. He came in today and put the players through their paces in almost a “job interview”. An contract offer has been emailed across, and hopefully should all be sorted soon. Likely to combine his role with the national team he works with, along with here, but that isn’t set in stone.
Re RH. Again, no embargo, PB hasn’t blown the budget and RH isn’t asking for big money or long term deals. It’s purely down to RM and his reluctance at the moment. We’ve been stung far too much with paying players that are unable to contribute to the side, through injury. Look at Ralph, Lennon, Hyam, Hooper etc. RH has an injury that will get worse over time, and will mean he has to hang his boots up sooner than he’d like. RM had similar doubt about a deal for Ralph, but age was on his side. RH doesn’t have that. Obviously anyone could break down on the first game of the season and miss a year. Could be someone prone to injury, with a history of it, or someone who has never visited the treatment table. RM purely is trying to limit that risk. It isn’t a case of the League One striker or RH or anything like that. PB needs to convince RM. Farnborough have offered RH more than us, but so have other Clubs, and he has turned them down. It’ll purely be down to RH and his patience with RM dragging his heels.
The League One striker is on more than PB realised when they begun talks a while ago, this has been bubbling away long before last Sunday. The League One striker would like to come here, but will purely be down to working out a deal. If he does join, he would have taken a wage cut to be here, and will fit in with the existing wage budget we have, not on top of that.
There is room left in the budget. I’m not privy to figures, only figure I got told before was a player we tried to sign, joined another National League Club for £3k a week, we will not be paying that sort of money. Now, we could have a barrel load or £50 left, I don’t know figures, but I know PB is happy with what he is working with and prepared to stick to those figures.
PB spoke very well during the zoom call last week, and confirmed pretty much exactly what I’ve mentioned before. I do have a bit more news, but I can’t put that out until PB makes it public, which he may not ever do to be fair. It doesn’t have to be something that is made public, especially outside of footballing circles.
Cheers @BoyWonder2 great update. You are normally pretty much on the money so your post has come at just the right time. Now comes the next stage in the saga, will those on here that have their own machinations on the situation at Roots Hall be prepared to suck it up when told that things are under control? Was meant to post an update earlier, but have been away on a stag do over the weekend and spent the day catching up with my missus and little boy.

There you go people, NO EMBARGO. So let’s not panic and I’m sure things will look a bit brighter in terms of signings by the 21st!Was meant to post an update earlier, but have been away on a stag do over the weekend and spent the day catching up with my missus and little boy.

I don't often make Ron right but can see why he is delaying on this. I just hope that the management team have other options in mind and haven't just focused on signing RH and let others pass us by.
Really helpful and comforting update (as usual) BW2. I do wonder what Elvis and his agent are thinking at the moment. I assume nerves might be jangling but could be hoping some L2 players have a bad start and he gets picked up at the end of the window. Can’t believe not training will help though.Another thing worth mentioning, which I’ve touched on before. The EFL started at the weekend and the PL starts this Friday night. Season start dates normally brings things to light a bit more.
Players, if they’ve missed out on the match day squad last weekend and this weekend, may fancy being in a match day squad the following weekend at a National League Club. Whether that’s a loan move, a permanent move or whatever.
Also, those free agents that have been holding out for the EFL will see seasons start, players in their position could shine, or out of favour players make a return and means you are no longer required. Option two suddenly looks like a great option after all.
Spl club will probably take punt on elvis. Motherwell especially love finding rough diamonds in league 2 and below.Really helpful and comforting update (as usual) BW2. I can't see why the injury problem can't be dealt with in the contract with a termination clause if RH is not available for selection. Or performance related pay, or a month to month contract or something. It do'able in a sensible way if both parties agree.
Have I missed something or is this new news? Surely not Chris Powell??An contract offer has been emailed across, and hopefully should all be sorted soon. Likely to combine his role with the national team he works with, along with here, but that isn’t set in stone.
We could offer a pay as you play or a lower basic with add ons if he plays, assists or scoresWhy would RH, or any player for that matter, sign a deal like that.
Anyone could break a leg, snap a ligament, Achilles tendon, or anything like that, not just players with injury concerns.
If RH breaks a leg 5 minutes into Kings Lynn and is released, he won’t have any income. If he went to someone on a one year deal, and did the same thing, he’d still have an income.
These players still have mortgages, rent, bills, cars on finance, mobile phone bills, kids etc so you have to make sure your bills are paid. Why take the risk?
Would you? I know I’d go for the security of the one year deal personally.
