Today's Times - Southend Report

Reg Martin

No Relation
Good report on our game in today's Times. Lots of compliments about us:
- a combative and organised team
- much to admire in Tilson's team
- a defence of four powerful no-nonsense six-footers (maybe a bit generous to AB's height I think!)
- Lee Barnard a genuine bargain
Only spoiled slightly by a sneer about us ever reaching Prem but other than that pretty good and great to see us getting some national recognition - in contrast the Five Live report I heard on the way home was all about Carlisle.

That's a good report and actually seems to be by a reporter who was at the match.

I'm not sure that is a sneer, as I am sure many of us would agree that it would be a leap of faith to see us in the Premiersh!te.

The Times said:
Southend in the top flight represents a leap of faith, but there is much to admire in Tilson’s team, not least a defence composed of four powerful, nononsense six-footers, including Charlie Mulgrew, whose free kick brought the opening goal.

Eh? That's nonsense - we've only two who are over 6 foot (plus Clarke who is just six feet).

Also

Raven said: “I thought I won the ball cleanly. You can often tell a lot by the reaction of the players around you. If it’s a bad one, people want to come over and knock you out, but that didn’t happen.”

Bailey and McCormack are the only two who'd consider doing that in our team and Bailey was on the floor anyway.

No, I hadn't noticed that.

I'd have thought that most Carlisle fans could have just added 15 points to the Leeds total.

And Macca did go over wanting to knock him out

LOL. I wrote that before seeing the sending off, and sure enough Macca was there in his face, whilst Bailey milked it on the floor.

Must admit when I saw the video of the sending off I actually winced, normally a sign its a pretty bad tackle as I'm very much in the opinion that its a contact sport and a man's game.

If you want a giggle at the thicko's of Carlisle, read one of their fan sites' messageboard. Their version of the sending off needs to be read to be believed. I must of been at a different game.

Enjoy!!

This post is uncanny

In case people are wondering, no it wasn't me, despite the similarities in our usernames and our shared belief in the importance of professionalism amongst ball-boys in the modern game.

Anything on there about an alleged tunnel incident after the final whistle?
On BBC 6-0-6, there's a post from a Carlisle fan alleging Nicky Bailey spat at at a CUFC official on Saturday (doesn't detail specifically if it was one of the coaching staff or a steward etc).

I wonder if anybody on here has heard anything from our side of things?

Scary thing about that thread on their board about ballboys is that I think some of them are being serious.

I think our club should get hold of better ball-boys.

They should be older and have more appreciation of the game. The trouble is getting 8 year olds is that they tend to lose interest when we are losing. That is the time we need the ball back quickest. Unfortunately they tend to be wide awake when we are winning, and the ball needs to be slowed down.

It is a considerable advantage to have the ball available quickly at set pieces.

John Beck used ballboys to great effect during his reign at Cambridge

I remember years back when London Blue was a ballboy and we were chasing the game. Micky Stead shouted to him as he went to retrieve the ball "early ball mate" . Thus illustrating the importance of the ballboys role.
