Tilson's rant

maninasuitcase

President
About naming 7 subs next season has got him noticed as it currently on CEEFAX page 310.

The downside, of course, is that the ravings of a mad man will drive any potential transfer targets into the arms of our rivals.

Suppose it may benefit the sides that have bigger sqauds more but surely having youngsters on the bench and travelling with the first team can only be a benfit cant it.

Benefit to THE club, but not necessarily ours.

I think the crux of Tilly's 'rant' is that now youngsters will be filling the extra spots, clubs could be less likely to send those players out on loan now.

if it benefits bigger squads more then they are gaining an advantage over the smaller squads - hence Tilson is against it

He moaned about the exact same thing last summer when it was announced that you could have 7 subs in the Cups and in the Premiership, but it didn't really hinder us getting loan players in.

Mountain. Molehill. ;)

I just can see it really.

Surely clubs are still going to be happy to see a young player go out on loan at say Southend and get week in week out football rather than 5 mins here and there coming off the bench in the Prem. What are they learning from no/minimal game time?

The only thing I've learned from this thread is that Ceefax is still going. Fantastic.

Thems the days when you used to watch the score pages go round imagining the game in your head then punching the air with delight with a flash score going 1-0 up...on an evening game....and thinking it was well in the bag until the page refreshed about 10 mins after the final whistle seeing that we'd thrown it away.....or am i the only one with this kind of strange fascination !!?

Ceefax was so much better than "Oracle" - think thats what it ws called. Always reminded me of a pensioner with a copy of the radio times.

No you wasn't :)

just means tilly has no excuse to not name a sub keeper next season, and maybe it'll give hazell herd, calver etc a chance?

As mentioned above the rule is likely to benefit bigger clubs who can carry bigger squads, so presumably that is what has ****ed Tilly off.

If it isn't that then as I mentioned when this came up before, what is to stop T+B registering as players and naming themselves, (bearing in mind that the availability of the youngsters will presumably depend on Youth team fixtures etc which often these clash with the firsts) ?

Nothing but why on earth would they? They are never going to play so what's the point?

So Tilly's complaining that a club with larger resources are able to use them productively at their own club rather than other sides get the benefit?

It's a novel argument .....

Of all the things he could choose to rant about, to me it is baffling he chose this one! How can it possibly be a bad thing to have more options at your disposal during a game if things are not going well, or if you have 2/3 enforced changes through injury??

I don't believe it gives any additional benefit to those clubs who can afford to have a larger squad - They would already have an increased pool of talent to choose from for the original five substitutions.

It's just a biarre thing to get all hot under the collar about.... Or maybe our master plan for next season was to have a squad of only 16 players?? Hmm... Come on Ron, shed some light :)

It was hardly a 'rant' was it?? He expressed his opinion and someone on here claimed it was a rant - smacks of being a quiet news day so lets focus on a minor story and see if we can make it into something it isn't.

Tilly obviously has a lot going for him as a manager, but I expect he himself would admit that use of substitutes has not always been his strongest suit, both in selection and, more importantly, actual usage and timing.

However to make the observation that he has, is frankly absurd. Having seven substitutes to pick from instead of five will make precious little difference to anything. Certainly nothing to get excited about.

I believe the original rant on Ceefax read as follows...

Sourthed Uni e manag r Ste e Tilson today
spoke of hi di pleas re with pl ns to in rease
the numb@r of ubs a club can na e frmm fhve to
sev?n.
in a 25 million pound move. Tevez claimed that
The Sou@hen. bosf went on to s'k that t moves
cou d only benefit the larger cl bs.
