Right, the next in the series of 'It's grim 'oop North' takes in those trips to Wigan.

Just the once for me :

Wigan Athletic 0-1 Southend United - 3rd January 1981

An own goal won us the match.

Went up by train on the Persil/Student Railcard super duper, nod and a wink, that's right guv, no questions asked, inter-city special, so probably cost about £1.50

We were huddled in a section underneath their main stand, (pic. below) and the locals were a bit feisty after the game, IIRC

Remember going to Springfield park in the late 80s. We lost 1-0 and the away end was horrible. Stood on a muddy grass bank behind the goal.

Oh my god I had forgotten about that muddy bank we stood on. It was just one of many awful grounds we visited in those days and normally on a Tuesday night when it poured down with rain.
The only saving grace was a pie and a pint and still change from an Old one pound note.

that game in Jan 1981 was a nightmare for me, after the game we got chased down the street and I ran into a burly northern copper who nearly strangled me with my scarf. As the coach pulled away I was being put in a police car. I got charged and let out at 7.30 with no money. I had to hitch from Wigan to Southend to get home. I went to court in the February I hitched to Blues game v hartlepool then hitched to Wigan I stayed in a B & B and on the Monday got fined £80 in Wigan court for threatening behaviour I then hitched all the way home again.

Just the once for me which was I think was the last time we played in Wigan, a poor 4-1 defeat in a good season, 1990-91.

For those that missed it:

Sammy had a bit of a nightmare.

Imagine the current lot having to endure a corner barrage like that. That XI had 6'7" Peter Cawley at centre-half plus the likes of Dave Martin in midfield and Brett and Benji up front.

The 3-1 game on a Tuesday night in March 1998.

One of the few games that Spammer partnered Andy Thomson and Andy Rammell together up front.

They were superb and we won 3-1.

The next game Spammer changed it again and brought back Boere.

Although we won 5-3 (0-0 at half time I think), we never found that form again and were relegated.

Yeah, that was one weird game. Think it was Bournemouth. 0-0 at half-time, won 5-3. Still haven't seen more goals in a game.

Remember that very well, Keith.

We were at the top of a hill going back towards the station and it kind of kicked off down the hill, under a street lamp.

Could see people running and some exchanging blows.

Also remember the court case debacle and all that hitch hiking for it.

We were followed back to the station, but there was a small police presence there and so we were OK.

Not the most enjoyable day out.

Only been to Wigan once that was in 1982-83 at the old Springfield Park Ground we lost 4-0 with a hat-trick from former Everton player Eamon 0'Keefe. Also in the Wigan team that day was former Liverpool & England centre-half Larry Lloyd, as well as former Southend loanee John McMahon who made just 4 appearances(3 wins/1 defeat)for us in 1970.
The team that day on the 9th.October 1982 was as follows:-Cawston, Stead, Yates, Clark, Otulakowski, Cusack, Pountney, Phillips, Mercer, Penneyfather, Nelson. Substitute was Tony Hadley. Attendance was 4,704.
