So now we are just one win away from promotion what are everyone's views of those 1st round cup exits now?? I remember many people on SZ saying how bad it was and the lack of additional revenue to the club would be missed etc! Whilst that might have been true I'm sure with hindsight we would have all accepted those 1st round defeats if it meant being where we are now in the league!

Thoughts/views???

I think I said at the time I didn't mind because it would mean less fixture congestion at the end of the season. I don't think I've changed my mind.

Cant say it was a good or bad thing.

Might have bred confidence, might have tired us out. No one can say either way.

Id certainly choose 3rd place over cup games !

Bizarre question....I'm not sure that league success and a couple of extra cup runs are mutually exclusive?

We're into parallel universe land again...had we had an extra cup game we might have had 3 key players injured in it..it could equally have resulted in players being that bit fitter and not getting injured in future games...confidence could have blossomed and we could have won the league in March....who knows??

I think it's pretty irrelevant as our best run of form has come at the end of the season when we'd be unlikely to be playing in cup games anyway (assuming we weren't going to win the FA Cup)

Those first round cup exits cost the club, no doubt about that. Let's just hope that the rewards at the end of the season justify them!

The season we were invicible at home (1980-81), we lost 0-1 at home to Hereford United in the FA Cup and they were bottom of the league at the time.

We went on to win the division.

In short : A good thing!

That was my first ever game, Glenn Pennyfather made his debut.

35 years ago in November, God that makes me feel old!!! :cricko:

You would have to say given our track record in cup competitions this year that we could hardly be considered favourites in the play offs!!

I find it difficult to be positive about
  • not winning football matches
  • not getting an increase in revenue (and what that revenue might have been used for)
  • not getting an opportunity to have memories like Chelsea , Man Utd etc
  • Not getting an opportunity of putting SUFC on the map by beating a top flight team
  • Not having an opportunity of going to Wembley twice in a year (I'm just greedy)

Apart from that I take your point :winking:
