The Walsall Match

fbm

Blue tinted optimist⭐🦐
They've appointed a new manager, Kevan Broadhurst.

New Walsall manager

On paper, this should be our easiest home game left. Walsall have been in free fall for a while - even Mersons departure as manager hasn't helped their fortunes.

Their fans are disappointed a bigger name hasn't been given the job, so Broadhurst is taking over a team 3rd from bottom in League One with the fans not exactly behind him. There's not a lot of downside to the job, is there?

We, on the other hand, are 4 points clear and to be honest, if we get 3 points on Saturday and looking at everyone else's fixtures, we could easily be 7 clear come 5 o'clock.

But we are Freddy-less, probably Maher-less and maybe Bentley-less. Football, being the game it is, will surely mean a honeymoon period of 2 or 3 games for Broadhurst and we are such stonking favourites that it really is set up for an upset.

In short, we don't stand a chance of winning. The best we can hope for is a draw.

Southend will be massively odds-on for this match, and if anyone has any sense they'll back against a Southend win. You'll get good value on a draw and great value on a Walsall victory.

Of course, I don't want Blues to lose. But this is the pessimistic head talking, pretty much as I have done all season, thinking "we can't keep this form going, we've got to drop off sooner or later". I think the danger will come when we feel we can't get beaten.

Ho hum.

4/9 with Ladbrokes. Walsall 11/2, the draw 13/5.

Fair points indeed, but I think that the performances at Brentford and in the first half of the Chersterfield game may have persueded us that we can still be beaten.

I've said it on another thread, if we play like we're capable of playing then we have nothing to fear.

Spot on.

I think we have a difficult run in of home fixtures.

Playing at this stage of the season against teams like Walsall, Scunthorpe, Hartlepool, Blackpool, Gillingham and Bristol City who are desperate for points at the bottom is in many ways harder than playing our rivals at the top.

They will come to Roots Hall and put 10 men behind the ball and battle for their lives. They won´t be as easy to break down as a team who is actually trying to win the game. Playing deep will negate Gray´s pace, whilst they will attempt to crowd out Eastwood and Gower whenever they get the ball.

Then once we´ve gone 20 minutes without scoring against the crowd will turn on the players.

I think we´ll end up drawing a number of our remaining home games and lose at least one on the counter attack to a team´s only real attack.

I hadn't realised until now just how tight it is at the bottom of this league. Take out MK Dons who are looking odds-on for the drop and you have just four points seperating the next 9 teams. Sadly, of those next 9 teams, we're playing SIX.

Optimist - they're down there cos they're poo and we'll win easily.
Pessimist - they'll be scrapping for points and we're doomed.

Don't be so negative!

Teams at the bottom are there for a reason - they aren't very good.

2-0 Blues on saturday.

That's the spirit.

Why are so many on here being so negative? I'd much rather have the home fixtures we have than have sides that are in the top 10 fighting for the playoffs or automatics.

These home games give us a superb chance of going up automatically. I'm confident anyway. However, i do recognise the 'curse of a new manager' could get us this weekend.

It's how I've been all season. I don't want to take it off in case it jinxes it the other way.

Because we probably all know deep down we are punching above our weight and we don't want to set ourselves up for a fall too much (especially bearing in mind the 9 or 10 years prior to Tilly taking over).

Plus - if we are negative, then if the team don't perform, it's what we expect. If they do perform, we are ultra happy!

I for one learnt in the late 90's that continually being openly positive only led to a lot of disappointment.

Privately, of course, I am ALWAYS positive and think we can win everything. I always make a case for how we can beat any team on the planet on our day.

I guess I've just been a lower division footy fan for too long...

An odds of 11/2 for a Walsall away wins look 2 good to turn down .... I think about having a punt on this. On paper we should beat them as they are in bottom 4 for a reason. When we was strugging in 1996 to 1999 & 2002 to 2004, once we took on a top of the table side, we know that keeping the score down to 1-0 defeat or a 0-0 draw would seen to be a sucess - Iam sure Walsall fans feel the same.

Steve (the club shop) - are you sure Mahar will be playing

we do need him there.

We may lose on Saturday, we may draw, we may win, but we should all appreciate the fact that we are doing well at the moment and enjoy it while it lasts. Now is the time that we are doing well so enjoy it. Next season if we go up it will be great to see some top sides at the Hall, but chances are we will lose more then we win.....if we dont go up this season, there is every chance that we could be like Bristol City or Hartlepool and have an almighty hangover after missing out...but at the moment we are winning games, playing nice football, so enjoy it.

I personally beleive we are punching above our weight and have been waiting for the bubble to burst, but if we can keep it going for 12 more games then it will be a dream season.
