The Stoke view of the match

An extract from the Stoke OS:-

The referee didn't help the flow of the game with some strange decisions, none more so than the booking of Andy Griffin for what seemed a good challenge for a fifty-fifty ball just before half-time. Griffin was hurt when the Southend player showed his studs, but to add insult to the injury, the City left-back was shown the yellow card before having to be replaced by Andy Wilkinson

Anyone care to comment? The BBC Essex commentary said it was a 2 footed challenge by Griffin...

From what I could see it was a committed, 50-50 challenge at a bouncing ball. Because of the height difference it looked like JCR came off worse... It was the kind of refereeing decision that would annoy the home support.

Saying that, they should count themselves lucky the referee bottled giving a last minute penalty for a foul on Harrold.

I thought Stoke were a disgrace to be honest.

There were some very dangerous tackles flying around in the first half. The referee should have been a bit tougher on them.

However, he undoubtedly bottled what was a clear penalty at the end. I don't think he wanted the wrath of the already annoyed home fans.

on bbc essex they mentioned how hendrie should have been sent off after a number of bad challenges. by what I have heard the ref bottled a lot of decisions!

For the incident in question, my take was that JCR nicked the ball past Griffin and Griffin was slightly late. I'd be very surprised if JCR did the damage as he tried to jump the challenge but was caught.

Stoke did so many challenges like this though and Griffin was one of the main culprits. I think a lot of teams will get intimidated by it but our players carried on admirably.

Did BBC Essex comment on the Peter Clark booking? As the teams came out for the second half the match announcer said Clark and a Stoke Player had been booked in the tunnel but didn't specify what for..?

For continuing an on the field argument/skuffle that happened about 5 minutes prior to the half time whistle.
