Still a canny pub?

Have fond memories of drinking in there before a foggy night match, where Michael Bridges scored his forst SAFC goal.

This was after an afternoon session in the Hamilton Hall i Liverpool Street :D

I remember it well. You brought about 2,500 on a Tuesday night. Both goals were in the south goal. The first a penalty given away by the later Premiership player Antony Barness (still cab't believe he made the grade) and then Michaerl Bridges coming on as a sub and rolling it into the far corner from 18 yards. The Sunderland fans never saw a thing. It was quite funny hearing the Blues fans groans followed by 30 seconds later an almighty roar when you realised you'd scored. :)

The Spread is still a canny pub, mate - although, sadly, I think I'm right in saying that away fans are no longer allowed in, which is a shame for me - but that's police advice for you.

:(

As for that game, I might have been at that one - a pea-souper so dense that we couldn't see the South Bank from where we were in the North Bank.

Spot on, you couldn't see past the half way line from either end after the fog came down.

Our keeper and 2 of the defenders didn't realise we'd scored.

Was convinced the match would be abandoned.

Lass I worked with was a SUFC season ticket holder and used to drink in the Eagle regularly.

Yep it was only the usual scorer announcement over the PA that sparked the celebrations in the away end, they can't have seen a thing! Even from my position in the West I couldn't see much, all I remember of the 2nd goal is Bridges, one of our back 4 and Royce all converging on the ball on the left corner of the box at the South Stand end and then.....NOTHING.....that is until the ball reappeared about a foot before the goal line and trickled its way in. For all I know it could've been a horrendous OG lol but we'll give Bridges the credit ;)

I remember being in the South Lower behind the goal in the first half and chanting "Roycie, Royce where's the ball" and Royce would just shrug to us. I can't believe it didn't get called off.

The lads had to play for Leeds, the scum, Carlisle and now Hull, plenty of bad karma since :p

To be fair he didn't know where the ball was last Friday, so nothing much has changed. :)

Why is it a shame when we can ram it full of shrimpers twice over?

I can see your point but part of me still yearns for the days of a half empty Spread Eagle where you could get served at the bar easily and have a chat with some away fans. However I don't yearn for being in the bottom half of League Two so will settle for how it is now overall :)

Exactly. This success lark isn't all it's cracked up to be...

:thump:

Nah, I just wish the spread were about 4 times its size, but with the same atmos - so you could get some away fans in too. I remember when Yeovil came down, and everyone was sitting outside with 'The Wurzels' on the Wheels of Steel... cracking, made everyone laugh that did.

:D

Drinking with opposition fans is one of the best things about football, but sadly seems to be dying out in these days of segregation and out of town stadia that most people drive to.
