An amateur football team have been banned from wearing their new strip because it bears the legend: "The referee's a ******." Stambridge United, who play in the Essex Olympian League, received the controversial shirts as part of a sponsorship deal with football author Chris Turner, but a league spokesman said they "could be deemed offensive". Turner insisted: "It's absolutely absurd."

If the league had any sense they should have allowed this team to play and issued a directive to referees allowing them the option to book every player for ungentlemanly conduct at the start of the game. The fines and suspensions would soon mount up and they'd have been afraid to put a tackle in.

I cannot believe they genuinely thought this would work. Seems like a marketing ploy to me.

Screams 'Publicity Stunt' to me as well.

No football league I know, amateur or not, would allow a team to wear something with that on...

Can you imagine the match reports?

"At 1500 hours I kicked off the game, blew my whistle, and booked everyone on one side for ungentlemanly conduct due to the explicit comments on their shirts."
