The New Home Secretary...

Firstly, WHO ARE YOU???

Secondly, she has admitted smoking cannabis when she was at college.

I just wondered if anybody gave a toss about this? If not, why is it front page news on the BBC news website.

Cheers

They did the same thing with that Cameron ****. he admitted doing dope when he was at school. i ask the question, quite frankly, who didn't try dope when they were at school?

Quite.

I'm slightly dismayed by the fact that she didn't buy her own - apparently she just taxed other people's at parties. ****ing skank!

i met her yesterday... well she walked through my office, seems fairly keen to learn quickly which is always a good sign

I think the fact that (another) government minister has admitted smoking cannabis is pretty relevant because as Home Secretary she is about to embark on a major review of cannabis.

I welcome her honesty and hope that her experiences help inform her policy making.

From having smoked cannabis she'll be aware of many deficiencies in the current and previous policy, for example: criminalising a large proportion of society and eroding respect for the law, the government and the police. Not having taken any other drugs, she'll be aware that cannabis isn't necessarily a gateway drug leading to harder, more dangerous drugs. Having smoked it more than once, she should be aware that it hasn't caused her any noticeable long term harm.

At least in theory. More likely now she has admitted a perceived weakness in the eyes of the reactionary press - eg having experienced illegal drugs - she'll want to show the Express and the Mail that she is tough on drugs.

Ominously the main difference between the Blair and Brown governments is currently looking like being that the Brown government is even more paternalistic. Brown appears to be that annoying type of socialist who claims to represent the working classes, but then won't trust the people to make their own decisions. The two major policy reversals look to be on casinos and now cannabis, and look to be a 'government knows best, people can't be trusted to make the right decisions' approach.

Surely this cannot come as a shock to anyone. Brown is classic old-school, top-down, centralist, paternalistic type of socialist.

So far as Gordon is concerned, Gordon knows best - that's how he ran the economy, and it's how he'll run the country.

So obvious you had to say it twice. :D

I always liked Galloway's interpretation of Brown:

"He and Blair are just two cheeks of the same ar$e."

Shame there's no credible alternative at the moment....

If she only smoked it once then all of that is a moot point really.
