The Goat on BBC Essex

Topgun Pilot
Did anyone hear his interview on BBC Essex after the game? He was saying that he couldn't understand why he was given man of the match - he said it was beyond him why he was chosen.

He thinks Adam Barrett or Andy Edwards should have got it. He said that it was the pair of them that won the game for us with all the blocks and tackles that they made at 2-1. As he said, if one of those would have gone in then the whole game would have been different.

I know players often say things like that, but you can usually tell when they mean it and when they are just paying lip service. The Goat came over as completely genuine.

Good on him.

I heard it and the other point I picked up on was his praise of the fans.

When we were under pressure in the second half the fans found their voice and he says it gave the players a lift and perhaps increased their performance by 5%.

We can all sing when we're on top, but it's when the chips are down that we are really needed.

He really is a legend isn't he. His interview on the official website, seems to be the same one as on BBC Essex, but he praises the fans, the defence and Lawson. Not bad for one interview.

I love Shaun Goater. Do you think if he has a good season he will sign a contract exstention??

He's always had a good rep as an ambassador for the game. I seem to recall he was Bermudas rep. when they were over in Manchester for the Commonwealth Games. That said, I also recall Joe Ross was out their waving the flag for one of the lesser known nations as well.

When I met Tilly the other week I asked him exactly the same question. His reply was that he thought he may well do.

No doubt that he is a top man, and the effect he is having on the (already good) team spirit is there for everyone to see.

Think he might be strecthing it a bit when he says the fans made the difference in the second half though. I thought the atmosphere was below average to be honest, and after Tranmere scored a lot of the noise was the usual mindless abuse!

I think the signing of Goater has been great for the club, he obviously enjoys his football and plays with a smile. I think it is great that we have a centre forward worthy of the name. I am also certain that Eastwood, Gray & Lawson will be able to learn a lot from himover the season.

i agree canveyshrimper - players like lawson will hopefully come on leaps and bounds with this man helping them along

Shaun is the man. My feelin is that as we all know he is in the twillight of his playing career. But wouldn't he make a good coach afterwards?Do you think after he finished with us playing (whenever that is) we could get him on the coching staff? He would be the perfect role model for all the players.

I couldnt help noticing that at the final whistle on Saturday, just about every Tranmere player, including McAteer, made a point of coming over to shake Goater's hand. It was as if they all respected him to the point of actually wanting to shake his hand. I am not one for making sweeping statements, but actually think that he brings that air of respect to SUFC. I cannot imagine that type of reaction from a beaten side without the likes of Goater. The profile of the club is greatly enhanced by a fellow of his character and I for one am all for it!

Given what Shaun's done in his carreer would you let the chance to shake his hand drop?

If we can get him to stay for another season, or as a coach then I'd say it's one of the best deals Tilly's cut as manager. Bar Freddy of course.
