Blue tinted optimist⭐🦐
Two good sides, a good open game of football, and a welcome 3 points.

Southend started the better and a great Pettefer cross found Gray in the area, but his goalbound header deflected off a defender for a corner.  However, shortly afterwards, Northampton got around the back and squared the ball to McGleish, who should have hit the target.

The first half-hour was like that... each side talking their turn in a few minutes pressure and then creating a chance.  However, I have to say that the Cobblers had much the better and clearer cut chances than we did.  Still, they didn't hit the target... and two of them were open goals with Darryl beaten.

Blues took the lead after about 30 minutes when Gower took the ball across the box from the left and hit an unstoppable rocket into the net from 20 yards.  A great strike!

We hit a purple patch for a few minutes and really looked as though we would extend the lead.  Then, out of nowhere really, Sabin danced his way around 2 Southend defenders and Che Wilson brought him down for a clear penalty.  Darryl however made a great save low to his left.  That wasn't the end of the drama though, as Northampton had 2 more clear chances before half time, the second one being when McGleish struck the ball towards an empty net with Darryl nowhere, but the ball hit one of his own players and went for a goal kick.

So, at half time, we were 1-0 up, but to be fair could easily have been 4 or 5 down.  We didn't play badly, but Northampton just took us to pieces and created chance after chance.  They have so much width all over the pitch and used it to great effect.  However, if you don't hit the target you won't score a goal.

In the second half Blues were under the cosh immediately and it seemed only a matter of time before the visitors got an equaliser.  But this Blues team were very resilient, and there were some excellent tackles and challenges by Maher, Jupp and Prior that meant that the second half chances for Northampton were few and far between.  As the half progressed, Blues came more into it and on 75 minutes, the hard working Wayne Gray dispossessed a defender to race clear, making a superb angle for himself and finishing in style.
There was some concern as to whether Gray had fouled the defender... I think it was a 50/50 "tussle", and a foul could have been given either way to be honest.  I wouldn't have been surprised if the ref had blown for a foul. But today, it was our turn to get the rub of the green.

Northampton seemed to get very frustrated now and Bentley, who had come on for the tiring Gower, seemed to be singled out for special treatment by Williamson, who was lucky to stay on the pitch IMHO.  He was subbed presumably to stop him being sent off.  We seemed to get several free kicks late on, but Northampton couldn't really understand that they were actually committing fouls all the time.

Just when it seemed as though Darryl would keep a clean sheet, Sabin hit a low shot from 20 yards with little pace, but it was so well placed that it went in the far corner.  I can't say that Darryl had any chance really, but I would think that any keeper would be disappointed to let a soft shot from outside the box in.

This set up a grandstand last few minutes - trust the Blues never to do things the easy way - but we hung on for the points.

Two final things before the ratings:

1)  The ref - by far the best I've seen at the Hall this season.  He let the game flow and played advantage brilliantly.  No doubt Northampton would not agree - but I don't think he got much wrong personally.
2)  Our performance.  I have seen elsewhere that some think this was a poor performance from us.  I think we have to give tremendous credit to Northampton for the way they played and were easily the best visiting side I've seen for some time.  But, they remind me of how we played at times last season... loads of chances, no goals.  Apart from the penalty, I don't think Darryl had a save to make.  But they just missed the target LOADS of times.

Ratings -

Flahavan - 7.5 - Great penalty save and a couple of fast pieces of distribution too.  For all their pressure and chances he didn't actually have much to do, but what he did do he did competently

Jupp - 7 - after a nightmare first 20 minutes, he settled and made some fantastic tackles in the second half, particularly.  Looks devoid of confidence and I would imagine reads the Echo, so will have seen all the anti-Jupp letters this week.  A bit harsh I think.
Prior - 8 - Commanding against quality opposition and had a good tussle with Alsop when he came on.  Didn't miss much.
Barrett - 7 - Was skinned in the first half by Sabin but battled back and brought the ball out of defence well.
Wilson - 6 - He will surely not face a more fearsome right side in this division (Low and Sabin) but stuck to his task.  He did however give away the penalty, and on at least 2 occasions backed off of a ball he should have won, allowing the attacker to take him on.  That's worrying and bad defending.

Gower - 7 - Great goal, and showed glimpses of great play.  But got very tired.  I don't think he is actually match fit and hasn't been for some time.
Maher - 8 - Class and battling performance... and he kept his mouth shut!  More of the same please Kev!
Hunt - 8 - Has actually formed a good partnership with Maher and had a pretty good game today.  He even worked a couple of scoring opportunities that were off target. Sorry - I can't get excited when he has a chance as I don't think he will score.
Pettefer - 7 - Lots of running and battling, Northampton showed us what width can do, and Petts doesn't give us that natural width.

Eastwood - 6.  He couldn't live up to the start he made and today looked off the pace.  Was deservedly subbed for Dudfield after Grays goal.  He missed 2 half chances and some of his lay offs were lazy.  I'd still have him though!
Gray - 9 - MOM.  Capped another hard working performance with another goal.  Battled incessantly and caused them problems when he got the ball.

Completely agree about the performances of the referee (who I thought was outstanding) and the opposition. Truth be told if Northampton had won today we couldn't have complained, but as fbm said if they don't get any decent efforts on goal then they can't complain that they didn't win.

I already said my bit on the gamme in the other thread but I'll cut and ;paste to here:

Wow, its amazing how people see games so differently. For me Maher was the best player on the pitch. When our backs were against the wall, as they were for most of today's game, he was the one getting tackles in and setting the pace of our game. His passing was top notch, he put in several crunching tackles and for once his discipline couldn't be criticised. I thought Pettefer played well too. He isn't a winger, obviously, but he works hard, he offers a lot defensively and he can put a good cross in, as he did a few times today. On the other hand I thought Hunt was pretty poor and I'd definately stick Bentley into the middle asap.

Up front Gray was quality. I'm a huge fan of Bramble and Dudfield, but Wayne has made this place his own recently and fair play to him. Took the goal brilliantly. Fredy impressed a lot in the first half and he showed what sort of player he really is. After Swansea and his hattrick he looked like your out-and-out striker but today he was dropping off and creating chances. He reminds me of Dennis Bergkamp. I'm obviously not saying he's at that level but he takes up that sort of position and he is able to get two yards on his marker with his first touch, just like Bergkamp does. Second half he was anonymous but that was because we weren't getting the ball, and when we were we were knocking it upfront looking for it to stick on the feet of the strikers, but thats not Fredys game. We were defending far too deep too for him to get involved.

my ratings:

Flavs - 8 - good penalty save and a cracking double save early doors. Didn't come for a couple of balls that he should have done but we've got to accept that is going to happen. If he didn't have that flaw to his game he wouldn't be playing for us.

Jupp - 6.5 - woefully short of confidence. Didn't do too bad but didn't add anything going forwards

Wilson - 5 - Poor game. Beaten at ease everytime he is up against a good winger

Prior - 7.5 - Northampton had all the ball but hardly created anything. This was mostly down to our centerbacks. Two lads you'd want in the trenches with you.

Barrett - 8 - See Prior. Also got forward whenever he had the chance.

Hunt - 6 - Not a center midfielder. If he plays there again look at the positions he takes. He just doesn't put the opposition under any pressure at all and in that position it looks like we're carrying him which sets the tone for the rest of the team's performance. I like the guy and I'd like to see him given a run at rightback, but the sooner Bentley or Smith is back alongside Kev the better.

Maher - 8.5 - Brilliant performance. His passing today was as good as I've ever seen it. Rarely gave the ball away, if at all. Strong tacking and disciplined. When he plays like he did today there not a better midfielder in this league.

Gower - 7 - Quality finish for the first goal and always looked likely to create something out of nothing when we were looking for inspiration in the second half.

Pettefer - 7 - Not a winger but works his b******s off. Adds stability to the right flank and gets forward when he can. A couple of times Gower came over to the right and Petts missed the chance to come inside or go to the left which left us short but hopefully he'll work on this the more he plays.

Eastwood - 7 - sign him up. Brilliant first half, much quieter second half but as I said earlier that was down to the way we were playing. Too good for this level lets get him under contract before anyone else realises this.

Gray - 8 - One of the most hardworking and selfless performances I've seen from Southend striker. Always offering himself to the midfield and always trying to hurt the opposition with his strength and pace. Must be the fastest footballer in England. Took his goal fantastically.

Subs:

Dudfield - 5.5 - Didn't really get involved. Held the ball up when required but thats not what we bought him for. I can't believe that the guy I was sure would bag us 20 goals this season is now reduced to a bit part role like this. I can't see him being here in six months.

Bentley - 6.5 - put himself around a bit as always but not suited to the flanks.

Thanks for your views guys.

Beefy, I'm really surprised about what you said regarding Hunt's performance yesterday. The general consensus is that he had a good game. Listening to the radio, it sounded like he was involved in many of our best passages of play... and the commentator was singling the man out for having a great game.

Still... it's all about opinions.

Sorry Beefy but what game were you watching? Jupp had a rock solid game, it seems that he is the player currently marked for constant slating!

Bit harsh on Beefy, me thinks.

Again, from the sources available to me, it sounded like Jupp struggled on a number of occasions... mainly being done for pace by the likes of Sabin.

jupp also got a couple of timely tackles in.

What I saw against the swans, and have seen mentioned here, is his poor distribution. He does the hard stuff of winning the ball, and then too often gives the ball straight back to the opposition, so we are immediately on the back foot again.

I didn't slag him off at all. I said that he looks woefully short of confidence. You're right, he was solid at the back and that why I gave him a decent rating. Itsnot like he was getting skinned like Wilson was. But he looked very nervous on the ball, no doubt a result of the slating he's been getting lately, and he was reluctant to offer anything going forward which contributed to our totally defensive attitude.

I like Jupp and I can't think of another rightback we've had in recent years that I'd take over him, but I happen to think right now he could do with a break away from the first team to get his game together.

As for Hunt, yeah he did some good things with the ball, a few nice touches and made a couple of nice runs, but its what he does off the ball imo that marks him down as a defender playing in midfield rather than a midfielder.

Northampton were unlucky not to secure a draw and thankfully we got 3 points. Last season this would have been a game we would have lost, it is good to see we are becoming harder to beat at home and hopefully a solid home record would be a basis to secure our league position..

I thought that the move which resulted in our second goal was class - a Northampton attack broke down on the edge of our box and exchange of passes between Hunt, Maher, Wilson and then again by Hunt (I think) sent Gray clear (whose pace is causing defenders a load of trouble and thankfully he is finishing off moves his pace has created).
We are playing some excellent passing football and although yesterday's performance wasnt the best this season I would take 3 points over pretty stuff anyday !

Yesterday can be summed up in one word:'Workmanlike'

Effort and hard work created the win, and it would be harsh to pick out a poor performance (Wilson? if pushed)

Caught the goals on Sky earlier. Gower's looked top-notch at the time and still does on television, but Gray's goal looks even better now than it did from the South Upper. Considering the pace that he was running at, to an advancing keeper with a defender on his shoulder trying to push him wide, it was a hell of a good finish.

Harsh. From our vantage point in the west it was placing not power and Darryl was not at fault.

Top marks to Northampton for making the game as good as it was. This game really could have gone either way and we were fortunate to go into the break 1-0 up. We looked good value for that lead in the second half though and Gray just gets better and better. If only he'd been partnered by someone prepared to gamble on his flick-ons. Hopefully Eastwood's learnt a thing or two from Saturday. Good in patches, but too often doing a Drewe and gifting the ball back to the opposition.

MOM by a classy country mile - Kev Maher (I know I'm biased

Good performances from Gray, Petts, Barrett, Prior and a much improved 90 minutes from Jupp.

It wasn't intended as a dig at Darryl but generally keepers don't like being beaten from outside the box. I was also in the West (RBS) and my initial reaction when Sabin hit the shot was that it was saveable due to it's lack of power. But, as you say, it was extremely well placed and not Darryls fault at all.

But I bet he's still miffed about conceding it.

Agree with that and having seen the Sabin goal, it was well taken. Darryl was about 3 yards off his line and central in the 6 yard box and could do little with the shot which was hit low and to his right.

Was a shame we couldn't have kept a clean sheet though... I said to my brother in law moments before, that a clean sheet would do our defence the power of good!

Me and my big mouth!
