I actually posted the report... it was BC who removed it, as is the usual arrangement. A link to it on the home page no doubt will appear soon.

It did go a bit sharpish though! Check the timestamp!

Good report

1 thing i did not agree with, i thought Bentley was superb, not his play as such, but at 1-0 down, it was he who took the game to yeovil, and so for me deserved a 9.

I was a Gray doubter, what was i thinking!?!?!

Wayne was amazing at the start of season, great on saturday, out of this world tonight.

Agree with most of the report, but just two points I disagree with....

Flav - Thought he was worth an 8 myself. Only one dodgy kick that I can remember so a touch harsh to mention that! Couple of very decent saves. Also his punch in the first half from a free kick was outstanding as the guy would have had a free header otherwise and probably resulted in a goal.

And

Goater - Think an 8 is very generous. Thought that was his worst performance in a blues shirt. Showed a couple of nice touch's as usual, but thought was very ineffective tonight. After he got injured think he should have been taken off. Seemed like he only won one header after that, which actually led to Grays goal.

Apart from that I thought tonight was pretty perfect! (Well the second half anyway!)

Quote[/b] ]Southend finally conquered their nemesis as they literally steamrollered Yeovil into submission on a fantastic evening at Roots Hall.

Parking the team bus in front of the goal is one thing. LITERALLY steamrollering Yeovil is quite another - and the pitch could get badly cut up! Have a word with your sub-editor, FBM. As usual, your bit was excellent.

Flavs made one good punch and one good save. I remember 3 or 4 poor kicks though. Everything else was routine and he didn't have much to do in the second half. I usually give 6 - 6.5 for an average performance and I think the kicking counters the punch and save. Otherwise sound.

We obviously see Goater differently. He is always talking to his co striker and the midfield, pointing out options to them. His positioning is fantastic, and both he and Gray worked the second goal so well against 4 defenders. For me, he is as important to this team as Ian Benjamin was in 1990 - and he, IMHO, was the main reason we went up to the old division 2.

Benji was absolute class for us in 90/91 and was a vital part of the team but I think Brett Angell's 26 league goals that season along with a healthy goal tally from many others may have been the main reason we were promoted.

True, but we'd had decent goalscorers before (Bill Garner, Chris Guthrie, Billy Best, Derrick Parker) and we hadn't gone up.

Benji's style allowed the midfield to come into the game more and create the changes for Angell et al to convert. Without him I doubt Brett would have got that many.

fbm - a masterclass in reporting, as always.

Almost nothing to disagree with there, except perhaps a generous mark for Adam Barrett whose display in the first 10 minites was... well, baffling. How he didn't get carded for three very poorly timed, clumsy and plain rank-bad tackles I don't know.

I agree with the mark for ORM's favourite as well. Totally outclassed by Darren Way - and Luke Guttridge - for most of the game. A poor display.

The thing I agree with most of all is how we took the game away from them in the last 20 minutes. The weird thing was that up until Luke Guttridge scored, we hadn't really got out of second gear; it was certainly not the sort of performance to which we are becoming accustomed.

But after Gray took his superb goal (and, I agree, Wayne was a clear MotM) to put us 2-1 up... well, that was it. We found about another three gears. How demoralising must it be for an opposition side to see the subs board go up, and for us to be bringing on quality like Freddy, Jay and JCR.

That was the thing which made the biggest impression on me, for sure. We might have a small squad, but bloody hell, it is pure quality right the way through.

Final thought - superb atmosphere last night. When the first goal went in, unless my ears were playing tricks on me it sounded as if the Roots Hall Roar was back.

Spine-tingling. I grinned like an idiot all the way home, and even managed to get them to talk about something other than Man-bloody-United on TalkSport for a couple of minutes...

Happy days. Bring on the Gills.

Agree with choice of man of the match Gray was absolutely immense tonight, best I've seen him play I think. He won everything in the air, the flick on for the Goater chance in the first-half was pure class!

To dispell a popular myth (IMHO), Angell only scored 15 league goals that season (the other 11 mainly coming in the LDV) and was dropped towards the end of the season after a poor run. Of much more importance were the double figure goal tallies of Benji, Ansah, Tilson and Martin.

PS excellent report FBM (as usual).

PPS the thing that really pleased me was that I got the impression we can play a LOT better.

PPPS watching the West Stand do the "easy" clap in unison at the final whistle was a sight to behold

It's funny how the mind and the eye plays tricks.

I've just watched the highlights on Blues World. In the match report I refer to some Southend pressure where we hit the post. However, it looks like it was blocked by the keeper nowhere near the post. For the Yeovil free kick I thought Maher played the ball... however it looks like he didn't get anywhere near the ball (but Jevons goes down really easily to be honest).

I thought Freddy started his run for his first goal in his own half, but he didn't and looked well offside.

But the biggest surprise was Grays goal. My recollection is a trickled mis%&t shot that the keeper waved his hands at 2 or 3 times before letting it through his fingers. Gray does mis%&t it, certainly, but the keeper is nowhere near it and it seemed a bit harder than I recall.

Different angles and different viewing points play tricks. Perhaps this is why sometimes people are accused of watching a different game.

I was bang in line with Freddy and he was a good couple of yards on side - the left back played him on (poor defending).
