The defence today?

Kim Mitten

First XI
Wasn't at the the game today but keep reading how "the defence was all over the shop".
I question this as I'd like to know how Barrett played?
Personally he has been a weak link for us in recent games, against Barnsley Hayes totally outplayed him and Barnsley's quality long balls cuaght him out time and time again. If Hayes could shoot he could have been embarssed badly.
The last week at Barnet the same their number 7 ran him ragged until he was subbed, and the long ball over him caught him out.

I've actually been quite disappointed in how Barrett has played in all the games I have been to and i've been surprised at how poor he's been at times.

I would say however that he is still looking really up for it and throwing himself at everything that is fired into the box but his form concerns me, we hardly have many options at centre back.
Edwards/Prior would just lack so much pace, but maybe Hunt at Centre and Jupp at right back might be tried just once or twice.

But hey we are 3rd, playing much better than I ever thought we would this season and its still a dream season, i'd just love to see Barrett back at his dominating best.

Barrett wasn't great, but he wasn't bad. I'd say he was slightly more solid than Eagle today. There is definitely less organisation without Spinner though, which causes our defence to be pulled from side to side somewhat. That and the 2 full backs not really wanting to commit themselves to a challenge.

I think flavs organises the defence well too which is probably a reason as to why the defence were all over the place. Both barrett and eagle couldnt handle trundle and akinfenwa and gave trundle too much respect. Barrett however did throw himself about a lot and made a few good tackles dispossesing them in dangerous areas

Thought Adam had a decent game today, though the 2nd goal was collectively an absolute joke. Barrett put in some excellent challenges and always seemed to come out with the ball.

I think people need to bear in mind when making their judgements that today we came up against a player who is far and away the best in this division, its a travesty Trundle isn't playing at a higher level (and quite frankly if he retires without having played in the Premier$hite at some stage he should feel cheated).

Thought Barrett played pretty solid but Edwards had a 'mare along with Hunt (out of position?)
Unusually shaky-bugger!

Personally i think Eagle showed signs of his injury, and as Spinner said in the Echo on friday the desire to play is so high as once you lose your place, you find it hard to get back in...

Spinner would have given the defence the necessary strength and organisation to cope with Trundle, whereas early injuries to Maher and Guttridge phased them out the game.

Che wilson was the one at fault for both goals for me.Both times he didnt get tight enough to trundle. They done to eastwood what we should of done to trundle took him right out of the game.

Fair dos if it wasn't for Hunt we would've been 1 down on twenty I'd guess, so his positioning in that sense is good, it's the rest of the time it was bad.

Strange to see no Barrett diving blocks or saving tackles too, he could've got to Akinfenwa's goal.

If Wilson had been tight to trundle for the second goal he would have been on the wrong side of the pitch! We would also have had half of our players trying to mark trundle.

and he still would have made the goal

Yep your right what i meant to say was wilson and barrett left two players on the back post for the 2nd goal and for me wilson was the nearest to Akinfenwa when he scored. At the end of the day we will start to slip down the table big time if we defend like that again

Well the whole point with Barrett I was trying to make was that he has been coming up against players (unlike Trundle) who aren't that great and they've been giving him the right run around (eg Barnet)

But as I said I didn't expect us to be at this sort of level and I'll still be happy if we finish 20th.
