Shrimpers Trust News The Big Walk 2025 - sponsorship

Medway Blue

Trust chairman/glutton for punishment ⭐🦐
💙🚶We’re delighted to have around 10 hardy souls, myself included (cries gently), taking part in the Shrimpers Trust's sponsored Big Walk, and we’d be over the moon if anybody would be willing to sponsor us and support our causes🚶🏼‍♀️💙

We will be setting off from Braintree Town’s stadium, Cressing Road, at 11:00pm on Thursday 17th April, and walking 34 miles overnight, arriving at Roots Hall on Good Friday - in plenty good time for the Braintree fixture that afternoon.

Half of the money raised goes towards our own Social Inclusion project, so that we can get more disadvantaged folks from the local community to live football at Roots Hall. You can find out more about the initiative here.

The other half will be split evenly between five brilliant Southend-based charities:

⚽ Achieve Thrive Flourish

🚲 Just Ride Southend

💜 Little Havens

🧒🏻 Packed with Smiles

🌱 Trust Links

This won’t be easy. It’s a serious challenge, but one with a huge reward – supporting initiatives that make a real difference in the local community, and supporting our football club.

🦘A very jet lagged Justin Rees will even be joining us on the walk!🦘

📌If you would like to sponsor our walking group, you can do so through the Shrimpers Trust website using the QR code in the attached flyer, or by clicking here.

‼️If you think you may know any businesses who would like to sponsor us too, please let us know!‼️

We'd like to thank Mike Paterson at MSPFX, c2c Rail, SBC Coaches and T-Scape for their sponsorship.

Well done to these hardy souls who are giving up their Easter weekend in effect as they'll be in no fit state for anything after!

If anyone can help out with additional sponsorship, or can just chuck a few quid their way, it would be much appreciated.

Really pleased and proud to say that one of our Junior Blues, Callum Freemantle, will be walking this alongside his Dad.

If you can show a bit of support for Callum by throwing a few pounds in, it would be most welcome!

Anyone know the route they will be taking?
In summary:

  • Through Braintree and out of it to the south.
  • Along London Road (parallel to A131), through Notley Green, Great Notley and Great Leighs.
  • Briefly along the A131 for a short stretch, and then onto the B1008, through Little Waltham.
  • B1008 south through Broomfield and into Chelmsford from the north.
  • B1007 out of Chelmsford to the south.
  • East through West Hanningfield, joining up with the former A130.
  • Rettenden, Battlesbridge, Rawreth.
  • A129 into Rayleigh from the west, out the other side along Eastwood Road and Rayleigh Road.
  • Whitehouse Road, past the Len Forge Centre, along Nestuda Way and onto the A127 at the Westcliff Tesco.
  • Along the A127, past Toby Carvery.
  • Down Victoria Avenue and into Roots Hall via the main car park entrance.

Anyone know if there's a way to donate with gift aid? Not sure the donation via the trust is gift aid'able

Unfortunately not. We elected not to use Just Giving or similar facilities, because we have found in the past that they have often taken quite a sizeable cut of the monies raised as their fee.

It's not as tidy, and obviously not Gift Aidable, but we have gone with donations through the Trust website (or via bank transfers) only on this occasion, and seeing how it goes.

05:32 - we're well over halfway through our Big Walk, approaching the old A130 from Hanningfield. The walkers have been superb and are approx. an hour ahead of schedule at the moment, despite starting late and having several stops along the way. We shall soon be joined by a couple of guest walkers!

Not long back from delivering bacon rolls to the group at Toad Hall at Battlesbridge. A group of four have broken away early, without eating the rolls, at a fast pace allowing the rest to travel the final 10 miles or so at a more comfortable pace. Our Junior Blue, Callum, has joined the breakaway group and is managing the walk comfortably.

Everyone in good spirits.

There's no collection at the ground as Bob Mays (who is known to many on here) had already had a collection organised for Parkinsons, however, we're quite happy to accept any cash donations in the Shrimpers or via the links.

I'd been told there was a vegan among the walkers (there was, in the breakaway group) so got some "meat free" bacon. I've just tried it....think my reaction was the same as Gwen's in Gavin & Stacey when she has one of Pammy's "special sausages"!!! The rest has gone out for the magpies!

Thanks to @braintreetownfc @SUFCRootsHall all our sponsors and all the charities we supported.
And to Toad Hall in Battlesbridge for our breakfast venue, and to Paul Yeomanson, Kay Fogg, Kelly Bolton, Amanda Jane Freemantle & Mike Paterson for all their help.
And a big thank you to the walkers, a superb effort.
