same old story, Gutts has another shocker, defence is a paceless shambles and what do you do, absolutely nothing. Sure he don't care anymore, Col U get in loan players but we see nothing, 11000 crowds and a dream cup draw and all we do is stay the same, week in week out, pathetic show i'm afraid!

Well, you've caught me.

Only the second match I've seen this season, but to say Gutts had a shocker is absolute rubbish. If we would have won and Gutts scored the winner then it would have been several weeks before you had signed on again. Always always negative, but to say Gutts had a shocker is actually just amusing to me. Just shows what game you watch, and the games I do miss to just not pay any attention to what you actually say!

Glad your all happy, one day we might be adventurous and win a game. Best team and lost again, something don't add up.

What the hell are you on about Wiggy. What doesn't add up?

We were the better side in terms of possession, team commitment, attacking football, passing football. The one thing we lacked was that clinical finishing that other teams are punishing us with..........and that bit of luck that every team in our position needs.

I suggest you go see a doctor because you clearly are the type of person that constantly sees the glass half empty rather than half full in everything....especially anything Southend United related.

Did you make the trip to Elland Road by chance?

Yes, Wolves next, must be mad!

The brutal truth? We're punching above our weight, we're simply not good enough for this division. If the team, though, give 100% and it's a case of falling short, I'm prepared to accept that.

Yesterday Southend gave it all they could but lost. That's life, that's football, that (to me) adds up.

That Mr Strain is bang on the mark. IMO we are currently "freerolling" in the Championshop and have nowt to lose.

The reaction after the game from the fans said it all. Nearly everyone stayed behind and clapped those players off. Im sure that wasn't the case at Derby ...

UTB!

It's all about defences, isn't it?  Ours makes one or two mistakes a game, and at this level we get punished for it; the opposition's doubles-up on Freddy, and we have no Plan B.

Efe Sodje's return is beginning to cure the former, although it'll be a couple of games yet until the defence has fully clicked.  Only the arrival of a genuine goal-threat from midfield on loan is going to cure the latter.

Either that, or a change to 4-3-1-2 (why play Gutts, it's not like we'd miss him?)

Hunt     Sodje      Barrett     Hammell

    Maher     Clarke    Gower

That, Matthew, is a line-up that I would love to see. Something I suggested a month ago on here, and some agreed. We still desparately need this new midfielder that everyone is describing, but in the meantime, I think that this lin-up could pose quite a threat to the opposition.

We had so much possession it was untrue. As we all know, however, we couldn't convert it into goals.

Maher had a lot of time and space and was doing well to direct the play, shifting it from one flank to the other, aided by Gower, who was trying to stretch play as much as he could. But for all the possession we had in wide areas, with no target man (until Harrold came on at least) it was unlikely that we were going to score from that pattern of play.

And when the play came through the centre they were able to just crowd us out. With that in mind, even when we having all that pressure, I wasn't sure where exactly we were going to get a goal from.

When you're playing in a team, at any level, you're usually aware of what pattern(s) of play will get you goals, whether that be ball over the top to pacy striker, high balls into the box from wide or simply just give it to your best player and see what happens, for example. Problems can arise if you're in a team and you just don't know where/how the goals will be scored. End result is lack of confidence which just compounds the problem.

How you get out of that mind-set is anyone's guess. I guess we just have to continue to work hard, as we did on Saturday, and hope something eventually clicks. Other than that, all you can do is concentrate on making sure that you're organised and difficult to beat, which is something we can improve on.

Playing narrow like that puts a lot of emphasis on the full backs to provide width. Hammell can do that, but Hunt, I would say, is virtually ineffective in the final third. I guess Francis will come back in and is a lot better on the ball than Hunt.

I, for one, am a big fan of cultured full backs. The higher the standard of football, the more important it is to have full backs who can really make a difference in the opposition half and in many ways, it is they who are modern football's real playmakers.

Clarke's distribution was pretty sloppy on Saturday, but there were things he did do well in a defensive capacity and did make some attempts to get into the box on occasions. If we had a box-to-box midfielder of the physical stature of Bentley/Clarke who was good in the air, even if he wasn't the most cultured of players, the wide players would have another target arriving late into the box that they could hit.

I think it would be effective as Francis and Hammell both play more like wing-backs.  If it was Che and Hunt/Jupp, it wouldn't work.  But those two provide width and there's nothing to stop the two wide central midfielders from occasionally going out wide (Gower is particularly good at drifting inside and then moving outside again).  If the team wanted to go wide like this this, then Hooper would momentarily drop back to central midfield until the two wide central midfielders came back, so that the one remaining midfielder in the centre isn't left too exposed.  If they wanted to play it through the middle, then Hooper pushed up so that he is just behind the front two would be very effective. It's one of those formations that could change ever so slightly during the game depending on whether a particular attack is built up through the middle or down the flanks. I think it would work with the team we have at the moment.

Perhaps we should get a few games of Football Manager going to work on a few scenarios and test out some these theories.

Incidentally, having said that, I read a small piece in the Times a while back with regard to FM, saying how managers could do worse than to have a little peek at the player database as it is so immense and is put together by hundreds of researchers world-wide.

Alot of your posts are controversial Wiggy and I assume are made to get a reaction, and I do think a lot of what you say makes sense. However, do you know for sure that Tilly isnt looking to bring in loan players? Whats the point in panicking and bringing one in if he isnt better than we already have?
Gutts played well last year and hopefully is just suffering a dip in form. Tilly isnt an idiot or he wouldnt have got us up two years running.
Give the bloke a chance and stop being ridiculous.

My point is that he is always last in the queue. Last with his subs, last to do something about a player playing bad and last in the loan market, what is wrong with pointing that out!
