The Ashes - 2010-2011 Thread

Just bought tickets for the 1st Test at The Gabba.

Anyone coming over for it?

Wish I was. Was over there in 2002/2003 and any optimism quickly vanished as Nasser won the toss and fielded and the convicts piled on the runs! Great venue for watching cricket though.

Wish i was too. Came over for 06/07 Ashes Melbourne and Sydney Tests. After seeing Steve Harmisons first ball in that 1st test go wide of Gully perhaps we should have known to stayed away! The series was actually lost before we actually departed Singapore on our way out there. Should be closer this time though.

Beers in the German Club over the road from the ground at lunch and tea, into the city on Friday and Saturday night to join the Barmy Army in the Pig n Whistle.

Should be a boozy weekend that one...love it!

I see the convicts are preparing well by getting bowled out for 88 this morning, after wininng the toss and choosing to bat!

Cracking game the Australia v Pakistan one. Australia have found back really well (or Pakistan have impoded) and they are going to be left with a tricky chase in the 4th innings despite having skittled Australia for 88 in the first innings.

Over the past couple of years there has been some truly gripping test matches.

The convicts have set Pakistan 180 to win the match. This could go either given Pakistan's ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The squad for the Ashes tour is due to be announced this afternoon, I can't see there being any surprises beyond perhaps Chris Tremlett who is being talked up.

It'll be the eleven that finished the last test plus Bell, Shahzad, Davies, Tremlett and probably Panesar, although I'd like to see Rashid, and please selectors not Tredwell.

I'd pretty much agree with that. They may take Bresnan instead of Tremlett as Bresnan strikes me as a 'good egg' and a good squad member / tourist who may give them the option of a 5 man attack, with Tremlett going with the Academy side that is also in Australia to be on standby should Finn struggle with form or injury.......

Like you I hope they take Rashid. If they have any intention of going with 2 spinners in a match (Sydney?) then surely it has to be Rashid or Panesar to give some variety to Swann, with Rashid the attractive option as he can bat higher up the order. Tredwell would be a very conservative choice.....and I wouldnt like to see him in a 4 man attack should Swann get injured (please please please stay fit Swanny!).

I think they will take Tredwell as back-up to Swann. If we are playing one spinner, they will want a like-for-like replacement. However, I think Monty will be in the Lions squad, and called in if the need for a 2nd spinner arises (Sydney defo, and probably Adelaide). I think Tremlett will be taken as back-up for Finn (again a like-for-like replacement), and I would take Shahzad as 5th seamer. He just strikes me as something a bit different to Bresnan, who tends to be a bit straight up-and down. Davies as back-up WK / Opener.

BB's squad -

Strauss
Cook
Trott
Pietersen
Collingwood
Bell
Morgan
Prior
Davies
Broad
Swann
Anderson
Finn
Tredwell
Shahzad
Tremlett

I'd take Rashid, but expect the selectors to take someone who can block an end. Whether that is Monty or Tredwell, I don't know. I think I'm edging towards Tredwell because at least he can bat and field and I don't expect either to contribute much with the ball if they do play. Tredwell toured last time (v the Bangles), so theoritically he should get the nod again.

Would also take Shazhad, Davies and I suppose Tremlett because I'm struggling to think of viable alternatives. Wouldn't fancy Bresnan one bit on those pitches. I'd be tempted to take Luke Wright as a specialist sub fielder, but I think he'd be better off for his long term development with the academy.
