Just got back from Barnsley - great fighting performance from the team against a very rugged (i.e. dirty) Barnsley.

We started OK, though Barnsley had the better of it. After the opening exchanges, Gower had a shot that the keeper fumbled onto the post and it looked like we may be getting a foothold in the game.

60 seconds later, we are one down due to a poor header from Barrett that Hunt re-directed towards goal past the wrong-footed Flavs... 0-1.

The whole Barnsley sides gameplan seemed to be to rough us up and put us off our game. Some pretty solid challenges flew around that the ref ignored. One of Barnsleys big front-men totally clattered Flavs during a high challenge - the ref called him over and made an obvious gesture that this was his one and only chance to make that sort of challenge.

10 minutes later, exactly the same challenge on Flavs from the same player and NOTHING. We somehow scooped it out for a corner, from which they scored again. THe fans were going nuts and it was a terrible decision from the official who looked out of his depth.

HT and Gutts, Maher and Brush all in the ref's face but its too late.

We give the ref plenty of stick and then a massive show of support for the boys which must have helped in the half-time lifting.

We came out 2nd half full of fire and Barnsley cannot get going. Eastwood starts to run the show and combines well with Gower, Maher and the Goat to create a few decent openings.

The pressure eventually tells as Juppy's low cross is mis-hit by Goater but falls nicely for Gower to tuck home - 1-2 game ON!

Barnsley seem withdrawn to the outcome and we turn the screw. Finally Eastwood gets his moment, twisting and turning, he looks up 25-yards out and wrong-foots the keeper with an unstoppable shot into the opposite corner.

We looked the only winners, but with so much effort put in during the game, it was too much to nick it.

Cracking performance though and huge credit to the crowd (around 2500?) who sang their hearts out and I expect this to be mentioned in the interviews this week with managers/players.

Everybody played their part, but I thought Hunt was really poor today. He couldnt handle the rough stuff and only for a Sodje or Prior to have been fit!

Ratings:

1. Flavs - 7 - Did as well as he could against 2 6ft+ strikers.
2. Jupp - 7 - Got forward well and defended ok.
3. Wilson - 6 - Some good defensive work but never got into their half.
4. Hunt - 4 - Terribly non-commited performance.
5. Barrett - 8 - Complete opposite of Hunt, was dead on his feet at the end.
6. Bradbury - 8 - Quality performace of touch and vision.
7. Gutts - 7 - Battled well and took a few big challenges.
8. Maher - 8 - Again, dug in and battled well. Was the heart of the performance today.
9. Gower - 8 - Good attacking display and linked well with those around him.
10. Goater - 6 - Was a good target man today, though quicker legs would have seen him have a few good attempts.
11. Eastwood - 9 - Terrified Barnsley every time he got the ball and a great goal to boot.

So nervy still! A defeat for Huddersfield tomorrow though and we can go up next week in all but goal difference....

Doesn't really matter what Huddersfield do tomorrow as long as we win on Saturday, what with our goal difference. Its gonna be a tense one methinks.

Glad to hear Freddy was back on form after a quietish game on Friday. Perhaps someone whispered to him that Billy Sharp had scored early on!?

I went and played football myself while the game was on and completly forgot about southend playing, nice to come home and see us with a point!

how u gave goater a 6 i'll never know, thought he was class today, linked up far better than gray and did alot of running forwards and getting back defending.

I just thought it was an excellent team performance from start to finish. Much improved from Friday and the better team today. We scored 4 goals yet came away with a draw!

I think you're being very harsh on Lewis there. I thought he did a good job. Sure, he's no Efe or Spinner, but he's done alright as cover the last couple of games.

As others have said, the Goat didn't deserve such a low rating either. He showed some real quality.

All in all, an excellent all-round team performance, particularly in the second half, no doubt helped by that superb support.

An amazing day. Roll on Saturday!

6 is a solid enough mark! Anything less is considered an off-day, 6 is average.

He did well did Goater, no denying, but as a striker, he had 2-3 decent chances that he should have at least got on target! Gowers goal was one, ok it provided Gower with the chance, but 6 yards out and he screwed it horribly.

He also went through on the keeper and tamely dribbled a 'shot' wide when it was easier to hit the target.

His all-round link play was very good though.

Lewis I will not make excuses for! When it was a backs to the wall job, he turned his back on it...

Goater was class, a 7 at least. Hunt recovered well from the own goal, 4 very harsh. Barnsley clearly tried to target his lack of height, pure route-one, how they can say they played free-flowing football is laughable. I actually thought Maher was the poorest, always trying those silly passes over the top which never work, needs to take a touch more sometimes. MOM would be either Fredy or Jupp who I thought had a very good game.

Hunt did well after the bizarre OG... Committed himself to his fair share of tackles and generally did well, i would've given him a 6... performance only tainted by the OG.

That's why we're top of the league!

Another thriller in this rollercoaster of a season. Firstly, from a neutral perspective, superb match. really end to end at times and you could tell why both teams are in the top 6.

In the 1st half we were so unlucky. The 1st goal came from a long, winding goal kick, Barrett was struggling to get there, headed it against Hunt and it went in. 2nd goal, well according to most sources it was a Maher OG. To me it looked like Devaney just headed it in but I was quite near the back of the stand and Maher was pretty tight on him. Anyway, the corner kick or free kick or whatever it was should've never been because before that, Devaney had fouled Flahavan for the 2nd time in the match, and he was on a booking before that so he should've also been sent off because after he fouled Flahavan for the 1st time, the ref said no more. The referee was absoloutely awful in the 1st half, one of the worst I've seen this season (we don't ALWAYS get sh*t refs) and as he walked off at half-time, because the tunnel is by the away end, there was nearly a flippin' riot as he walked off. I think it got to him, because in the 2nd half he gave most decisions to us.

So half-time, everyone angry and down, but as ever Tilly's men come out fighting. Some early pressure in the 2nd half leads to Gower getting a goal back, and then yet another magic goal from Freddy to make it 2-2. With the momentum we had at that point we looked like winning it but it died down last 10 minutes, and Barnsley started to come back into it towards the end and had a goal disallowed, which was hilarious because some of the home fan near us went on the pitch and it took them about a minute to realise it had been disallowed. The looks on their faces were priceless.

Overall, a draw was probably a fair result. I can see why Barnsley have the best home record in the league. They're very strong and physical with a lot of height in their team and cause a lot of problems when playing it long. They're also very dangerous on the counter and have a very good winger in Shuker. For their official site to say that they played free flowing football is rubbish, though, they mainly played long ball.

Nearly there.

Very harsh on Lewis. I think you had it right that he didn't respond very well to the rough stuff (and virtually ever time he headed it he was getting shoved or clattered) but he still shone through as the class player that he is. The og. was just one of those freak things that happen once a season and was totally against the run of play. Barnsley had a game-plan of roughing us up (Flavs in particular) and I thought the boys gave as good as they got in the end despite lacking the physical presence of Prior and Sodje. Gutts is certainly someone you'd want standing next to you in a brawl - despite having the crowd booing his every move and the Barnsley players responding by trying to kick lumps out him, he never took a backward step and led the fightback in the second half. He was my MOTM just for that. I thought The Goat was an asset yet again. I can understand the lower mark as he misplaced one or two passes but there's just something about him - we look a better team with him on the pitch. Gray was a poor replacement and personally I would have liked to have seen Mitchell Cole come on instead to run at Barnsley's tiring legs for the last ten minutes.

Cracking day all-round, even the journey to and from Barnsley was a great laugh and it was good to see Shrimpers get together in another grim northern sh!thole in such good numbers. It's all in the post now....

So would yours be if you had 2000+ people singing "SIT DOWN SHUT UP" at you.

Great moments in life eh?
