Team for second leg

desire

Guest
After watching the game it struck me as to what to do in the second leg. Macca and Bailey for all their effort never looked like creating anything, due to the 5 man Donny midfield which presumably will still be the case in the second leg, especially with Heffernans red card. With this in mind, I think Southend should fight fire with fire, and instigate a 4-5-1 in the leg, with the team as follows -

Flavs
Mulgrew - LB
Barrett - CB
Clarke - CB
Francis - RB

then

Gower - LW
Macca - MC
Bailey - MC
Kanu - RW
Black - AMC

Barnard - FC

Whilst that may seem a little Football Manager esque, Black (who had a shocker today, and that's from probably his biggest fan - join this btw) had his best games for us in a more central position, and giving him a Maradona type role maurading around the box would be perfect. Barnard can play the lone striker role, and Kanu's trickery and Gower's 'footballing brain' would work wonders. Southend need to work the Donny defence down, and Walker isn't going to be doing that.

Alternatively, send a 4-4-2 out and hope for extra time and penalties.

Like I said though, Walker isn't the player we were all hoping him to be.

Yet he came closer to scoring tonight than Barnard...

Even if I were to agree with you I wouldnt leave Black in the side who was far worse tonight nor would I play with one up front when we need to win.

Speak for yourself. He is 20 and still lacking a lot of experience, and yet having just watched the game through again he was one of our better players and caused the Donnie defence all sorts of problems. I bet they would be delighted (but uncomprehending) if we dropped him for the second leg.

if you're going 4-5-1, thats where Revell should be slotted in at AMC, but Iwould imagine black would get first crack, as he scored a few up front when he filled in.

Sorry got too add is that the same age as Hooper? by the way where was he tonight?

Funnily enough i think Blacks best games have been upfront or maybe behind the front two would suit.

I think Walker shows promise but was disappointed in his overall performance last night. Barney had obviously been marked out as the danger man meaning he was getting very close attention (and getting very little help from the officials) so Walker should have had more opportunities. I'd drop him for sure from the starting line up next game. From O'Driscoll's interview after the game, he seemed to imply Donny were playing a 3-4-3 line up - didn't quite see it myself, as they always seemed to have players everywhere, however, I agree with Dloman that Black's best games for us have been in a more centrally attacking forward role so maybe there is some merit of a sort of 4-4-1-1 line up.

Knowing Tilly, he will pick the same 11 becuase i think e thinks that Black gives us a bit of balance with Gower on the other wing but I would pick -

Flavs

Franny
Clarky
Adam
Charlie M

Walks
Bails
Macca
Gower

Barney
Revs

Collis
Hal Robson
Moose
Blacky
Hoops

I think it's worth remembering that when we have no fit strikers, Tommy Black did a great job up top for such a small guy. Yes h - a e had a shocker last night, but surely, he will want to put that right. He kept coming inside - a clue as to where he really wants to be. So I would go for

Flavs
Francis Clarke Bazza Mulgrew

Kanu Bailey Macca Gower

Black

Barnard

subs:
Collis
Walker
Moussa
Revell
Elvis the Eel (the surprise element to throw the oppo)

Black has a good deal of skill and vision, but is not naturally suited to wide play. Get him in the area that he can do some damage

I agree actually Peanut, although, like I've said, I'd be tempted to leave Collis out to give more attacking support in the likelihood of the extra half an hour being necessary. I'd also bring Revell on alongside Barney when Black runs out of steam (which he would do), and have Hoops on the bench.
