Switzerland

Vange Shrimper

Mrs Rock God
Has any of you been to Switzerland? If so, I need some information from you.

Im going there next week and I need to find out how expensive it is there. Some of the Swiss websites i've been on are useless. I know that they aren't part of the Euro or EU, but would they except them as i've got loads to get rid of and the local travel agents are trying to rip me off converting them.

Any other info about the place would be grateful. Ta

Hils

We've been told to take £50 each just for food and we're going for 11 days. I've also been told that a pint could cost as little as 30p, which i'm now not believing.....

I work for a Swiss bank, and Switzerland is quite expensive but as I am usually on expenses and the swiss bods pay I cannot recall the prices.

They are not part of the EU so you will need Swiss Francs.

Where are you going? And I can find out some local info.

Staying in Arolla, near Sion, in the French part. That's good, cos I cant speak a word of it. And it's 6000ft above sea level!

Switzerland can be expensive. For instance, Zurich is renowned as one of the most expensive places in the world, more than London and even Tokyo. But the rest of Switzerland tends to be not much more expensive than the UK, although food prices are notoriously high wherever you are. Beer is expensive - it varies from about £2.70 to £4.90 for a pint of beer, depending on your location; look out for Eichhof; a great beer.

(The only place in Europe where I know they serve you a beer for 30p was an old run-down bar in Sarajevo about seven years ago!)

Bottles of beer cost us 20p in Serbia at Easter! God, i love it!!

That is nothing Hils, I live just below that altitude all year round.

I probably know less than most people on this board about Switzerland, but my friend thought that England and Switzerland were fairly comparable in how expensive they are, but that's from an American standpoint where our currency is s%&t compared to the GBP.

neer change euros at a travel agent.. at rip off! if you can afford to, just keep em they will always be used eventually.. or im sure someone on here will have them off you 'mid market'..
ive only ever been to geneva airport then straight out of country to france.. a mate of mine reccomends travelling around by train if you get time

I have spent a few weeks in Switzerland and if you are planning on living on Muesli and Toblerones then you might just survive eleven days on £50.

Otherwise you have no chance I am afraid.

I can also confirm that beer is expensive.

You can pick up VERY cheap wine in supermarkets. A colleague of mine bought a litre carton of red wine for 35p.

Yep, booze in supermarkets is relatively cheap; eating out anywhere in the Alps - Swiss or French (or Italian for that matter) - is not cheap.

Some larger places may accept Euros, but you'll get ripped off in that they'll offer you a crap exchange rate for them when you buy your goods.  Keep your Euros - you're bound to head to somewhere in the Eurozone sooner or later, aren't you? - and get Swiss Francs.

Matt

On the plus side ciggies are dirt cheap

- about £3 a pack and less than that in duty free - You'll only be able to (legally) bring back 200 duty free but as many as you want purchased in Switzerland.
