Man in charge of Saturday's crucial (aren't they all now?) match is Police Officer David Phillips from Chichester, West Sussex refereeing in his second season. This will be his third Southend game and his second Southend home game; his only previous Southend home match being the match against Huddersfield last season when we lost 1-0. I can't recall too much about his performance and think it was pretty decent. He gave us a penalty which Walker squandered so it wasn't his fault we lost.
Booked Macca - don't they all ?
Since then, he refereed our away match at Yeovil earlier this season, when he, correctly in my opinion, dismissed Morrison on his Southend debut.
Booked Macca - don't they all ? ... and Grant !
Well, he'll be breaking his sequence of booking Macca in each Southend game; let's hope the 1-0 defeat sequence ends too.
Although a newish ref, this is no fast-tracked wonder kid as he started refereeing 28 years ago (before Stuart Attwell and Michael Oliver were born) and just made it onto the League list last season.
His 18 league matches thus far this season have produced an above average 59 yellows and 2 reds.
His most locally publicised moment occurred at Grays, a couple of years ago, when Jamie Stuart was sent off for a challenge which broke a York player's jaw and led him to be charged with, and acquitted of, grievous bodily harm at Basildon Crown Court nearly a year later.
All other officials are regular visitors from Kent: David Buck and Ian Crouch on the lines with Tony Mason on board duties.
