Man in charge tonight is James Linington from Newport on the Isle of Wight. He is a highly rated referee in his fourth year having previously been a Select Group Assistant Referee.

He has always looked pretty decent when I have seen him referee, but he will show an early card to set the scene if necessary. He has done more Championship games than any other division this season and his card count is decidedly average for yellows and low for reds. 20 matches have produced 62 yellows and just the one red. His last match was the televised game between Bristol City and Middlesbrough.

He has not had a cardless match for well over a year and I wouldn't expect one tonight.

Those 20 games this season include Swindon's win at Crawley and the most cards he's ever shown in a League game was Swindon's home match against MK Dons last season.

He has refereed Southend just twice before. Firstly the 3-0 home win against Carlisle in 2008/9 and then the following season at Wycombe. For Southend he only cautioned Grant and Macca respectively in the two matches.

He was down to do last season's home match against Gillingham but was replaced at the last minute.

He will be assisted by Lee Betts from Great Yarmouth and Elliott Kaye from Hainault with Ian Cooper from Rochester once again the 4th Official.

My money is on a certain little Irishman. :whistling:
Timlin's not playing so ... Ferdinand?

Not a fan of the idea that a ref is deemed 'worse' just because he gives more cards? some of the poorest refs I've seen are those that don't set their stall out early, so the players then take the **** out of him for the rest of the game, resulting in sudden weird decisions, inconsistencies and general lack of control.

Thought the ref was decent too. A few bits he didn't spot, but that tended to be Swindon doing niggly fouls in areas he wouldn't have been looking

Yep decent performance, another ref might have punished them a bit more. I thought we seemed to get away with one or two fouls in the second half (my view wasn't great).

Should he should have sent Ritchie off for kicking out at Grant, I didn't get a clear view (damn posts in the West)

Yeah not a bad ref. was a little annoying how he kept telling us to stop walking forwards for throws get let their little ****** no.7 basically run the other end of the pitch.
