After last week’s emotional rollercoaster of the defeat at Boston and the home win against Oldham, the Southend play-off chase show travels for the first time to Gander Green Lane, home of Sutton United.

The season that we got relegated to the fifth tier was the same season they got promoted to the EFL for the first time, hence us not visiting them until now.

Their current form is not as good as ours and they find themselves 9 points off the play offs in 15th place.

They won their place in the final of the pointless National League Cup on Tuesday evening after winning at Braintree on penalties - their last league game ended in defeat at Boston.

They have a few familiar faces in their squad in the shape of “Super Steve Arnold in goal”, Henry Sandat and Alex Woodyard.

Kev must again decide whether to stick or twist for this game. Whatever side he chooses they should be full of confidence and will be noisily backed by over 1100 Shrimpers.

Other games on Saturday involving our play off rivals;

Altrincham v Yeovil
Gateshead v Daggers
Maidenhead v Tamworth
Eastleigh v Halifax

Rochdale have an FA trophy semi final which adds to their already congested fixture list.

So who would you choose to start and what do you think the result will be?

Super Steve to drop the ball and pass on to us, as he did in our home game this season.

I'm mindful that they turned us over at Roots Hall, so this will not be an easy game. That said, confidence must be sky high after Oldham, and provided we are on it from the beginning, and deliver another 90+ minute effort, then we should come home with something. As Pro footballers they will see that the immediate reward of a win will be a play-off place, if that doesn't motivate, then nothing will.

They did but we were all over them before their horrendous equaliser. Should have been more than 1-up but looking back we were a very fragile team then and barring Boston we don’t seem like that anymore. Their equaliser at RH still gives me nightmares.

Still the biggest surprise score of the season for me.

For personal reasons I had to leave the game early this day. We were 1-0 up, should have been 2/3 already within 25mins or so, and I was impressed equally with our start, and how bad they were.

Fully expected I'd get home later that day and be annoyed at missing us winning 3 or 4-0. Imagine my shock when I saw the result!

Fair! Sitting through it was equally as bad. We just fell off a cliff and they played really well, tearing us up really. Was an eye opener.

We owe them one.

Away from home ...

Large following ...

Must win game ...

We've all read this script before
And that's what scares me. We need to stand up, go for it and make it count. Teams around us will fear us and be looking out for our results. If we win this it'll be huge, will also make Braintree a gigantic game with what I imagine would be a close to 9k attendance.

Sutton capacity is just over 5,000 these days. About 2,000 home tickets sold and circa 1,350 away tickets. Probably looking at around 3,750 total on the day.

Worth noting that there is zero pre-match talk on their forum, apart from a couple of lines about it being their legends day with a few global megastar ex-Sutton players to be wheeled out pre-kick off.

Sutton's midweek away win in the NL Farley's Rusks Thimble semi-final might have eaten into a few giro balances. Being in the final at Wanstead Flats against Leeds Embryos Third XI seems to have caught their imagination rather more than this match. With a bit of luck, we'll be halfway down the A127 with 3 points in the bag before they have woken up.
