Substitute appearances

Macauley Bonne has made 151 sub appearances in his career to date.

With a decent cup run he could theoretically make it to 200 this season.

What’s the record for most sub appearances in a career

(a) for Southend
(b) by a player who has played for Southend; and
(c) by any player

This seems like something @Napster would know

Has anyone made more sub appearances for us than Tilly?

I reckon Marc-Antoine Fortune, Jermaine McGlashan, Gary Hooper, Hal Robson-Kanu and Theo Robinson must have all reached a ton of sub appearances in their careers. Maybe Paul Furlong and Lee Barnard as well?

Looking at Soccerbase (which keeps season stats from 1996 onwards, and some career stats beyond that):

a) most substitute appearances for Southend:
Freddy Eastwood (58)
Barry Corr (54)
Theo Robinson (50)
Steve Tilson (45)
Tesfaye Bramble (44)
Jermaine McGlashan (42)
Trevor Fitzpatrick, Andy Thomson (41)

b) most substitute appearances by any player who has played for Southend United:
Robinson (234)
Matt Harrold (215)
Myles Weston (196)
Hal Robson-Kanu (188)
Neil Harris (164)
Thomson (161)
McGlashan, David Worrall (153)

(Marc-Antoine Fortune 131, Hooper 138, Barnard 107, Furlong 136 from those you mentioned)

A few caveats: on the latter, I only looked at players that had made a significant number of appearances or sub appearances for us, on the basis that they'd be likely to have made a number of sub appearances for us in amongst a total of 150+ sub appearances in total. Happy for others to identify some others and correct this! Also, Soccerbase doesn't count FA Trophy, FA Cup qualifying rounds or Step 2 and below appearances, so some numbers may be adjusted from that where a player (or club!) has dropped into non-league football.

c) Don't know this; a Google search for most substitute appearances just throws up most Premier League substitute appearances, or most overall appearances.

d) Most substitute appearances in a season for Southend United (1996/97 onwards):
25: Harrold (2006/07), Lawrie Dudfield (2004/05)
24: McGlashan (2016/17), Eastwood (2013/14)
23: Barry Corr (2012/13), Jack Wood (2023/24)
21: Weston (2014/15), Stuart Thurgood (2002/03)
20: Michael Kightly (2018/19), Eastwood (2012/13), Hooper (2006/07), Bramble (2003/04)
