Subs

Does Tilson not realise that we can make a sub before the last minute of the game. Black is our most penetrating, skillfull attacking players in the team and if he doesn't start the being put on after an hour or so would really cause the defence some problems. He comes on with a minute of normal time to play almost as if tilly is running the clock down. The same with Odhiambo, how is hes supposed to make a difference without anytime to do so. two fresh players could have knocked Brighton whilst their confidence was down, instead we created no chances and let them steal the show., ****ing ridiculous

still a long way to go

Agreed. Even the rose tinted brigade on here can see the weaknesses in tillys management now. That says it all...

Tilson made a change against Leeds - and then got slated for it when it didn't work out.

He's damned if he does, and he's damned if he doesn't.

Leeds was more than 'a change'. He moved 2 of the back 4 out of position and replaced one of the remaining two.

But I agree - why make subs with a minute to go? Pointless. :fury:

Its not pointless, it helps the other team run the clock down when they are winning, another great tactic tilly!!

In most matches usually theres a sub made around the hour mark, and maybe another 10 mins later etc. Around the hour mark yesterday things were going a bit flat - and we were screaming for tommy to be taken on - but low and behold no - it stayed the same and the opposition stepped it up and scored ...im watching a re-reun of the pool/derby game here-and on the 60min mark when it went a bit flat - benitez took pennant off for benayoun, and they went and looked rejuvinated and scored 2 fairly quick sharp - then on 70 another change with babel coming off and a striker coming on to rev things up again...again looked lively and scored

leaving the same players out there for 88 mins and then making changes means that if the game goes 'dull' with no goals for a while - players may find a comfort zone and you saw what happened yesterday at brighton...it really frustrates me to see tilly leaving it so late - but nothings going to change in the forseeable future i think

Tilly thinks that the best players at 3pm are still the best players at 4.30pm which is why he doesn't make too many changes. I don't think we lost because of our use of substitutes, we lost because of Brighton's bold use of subsistutes and that's the lesson that I hope Tilly can take on board. Making changes when we're winning and looking comfortable can cause more problems than it solves (if it ain't broke, etc) but too often when we're behind we won't change things. Brighton showed yesterday what substitutes can do particularly if they are different to the type of player that are already playing (Bas Savage).

The Leeds change can't be used against the argument to make subs. Changing around 3 of the back 4 in the last 10 mins whilst at 1-1 is criminal.

What is even more annoying is that he doesn't make subs when clearly people are tiring. By everyones views Gower was knackered long before the 85th minute when he came off. Against Millwall, Harrold was out on his feet after 70 mins. He was left on for the 90 because, and this was direct from Brush's mouth "he's tall". :thump:

i dont think that changing a game when you are looking comfortable can cause more problems than its worth, ye if you change the defence maybe, but if he would have bought some pace and skill on (ie black and eric) on about the hour mark they would never have made there subs because we wouldnt have been looking comfortable, we would have been looking dangerous so they never would have bought loads of strikers on at the fear of going too many behind.

We need to go at teams in the last half hour even if we are winning not let them come on to us because we are bound to crack un der pressue. It showed yesterday when they scored there first, we picked our game up when down the other end and scored, why didnt we do that a bit earlier rather than try and sit on a 1-0 lead???

I think a lot of it is confidence and having not won away for a long time, it is natural for us to be cautious and to try and just hold on.

it might be natural but how many time over the last few years have we done that. they must have learnt by now that they are going to get bombarded with ball after ball into the box if the just let them play. For example when gower went off against milwall and black came on when the ball was cleared we looked like scoring on a number of occasions as they were pressing forward and leaving massive gaps for black to exploit which is wat we needed against brighton

Agreed - Earlier subs would have got us a point at least. as above Savage changed the whole game we needed fdresh legs up front and Black would have relieved the pressure and saved me £100 bet (and won me the same again). Worried everyone will cotton on to this way of playing against us. Let Southend look pretty with 70% possession and then bully us in the box and on the break

how funny was butters hissy fit aswell, he must have seen too many arguements in the clubs around brighton, proper drama queen

i've heard on here before people saying that the reason why tilly leaves it so late is due to bring superstious (cannot spell). if this is the case then it is total bollocks.
