Subbing Sawyer off?? Bad decision!!

What was all that about?

Our best player on the pitch IMO, and Tilly goes and subs him off, bad move. The guy covered every blade of grass, and was a constant threat. We must sign him up for good.

And why have the floodlights on from half time? Was there poor visability in the ground? It was a gorgeous day, or have we money to throw away on needless electricity bills?

Was going to start a thread about this myself as I also wanted to discuss the booing when this happened. I think Sawyer is quality but still has a lot to learn. Would love it if we signed him but don’t think Chelsea will let him go. As for the decision though. Tilly has done great stuff with Southend and although too early to tell we are starting to show some good form. Booing for taking off Sawyer is absolutely pathetic and just goes to show how thickel some people can be and really ****** me off. In previous games we could have gone on to lose this game. Heads could drop after letting in the goal and again when down to 10 men.

I personally think that Christophe has more of a presence and was the right player to keep on.

Given the circumstances pleased with a result. Oh and how **** was the ref

I agree Daisy - as good as Sawyer was, it was about the only move Tilly could make. If he took Christophe off and left Sawyer on, we would have been in big trouble as our midfield would have large holes in it.

Kanu had to stay on because of his pace (thought he had a good game) - and although replaced soon after, I like the idea of keeping 2 forwards on when you are down to 10 men (although I know Barney dropped into MF before the sub).

So really, it was Sawyer or Betsy and I think give Betsy's experience and the fact Stockport were pushing us back - it was about the only sensible move Tilly could make.

Whether anyone agreed or not, booing the decision was bloody stupid. After a run of 4 games won, to turn around and boo a substitution was embarrassing and I hope those fans realise that now...

I agree, it had to be Sawyer, who else was there to take off ??? Any of the back 3 would have been plain stupid, Christophe was needed to shore up the midfield, Robson-Kanu can create something for nothing and the two strikers were doing quite well together. That left Sawyer and Betsy and Tilly mustve opted for experience, plus there were occasions today when Sawyer was outmuscled so that may have been a factor as well.

The "don't know what you're doing" chants where just silly - but there you go, some people are just itching to slag Tilly or the team off over anything.

Agree with Daisy too. At that point in the game it had to be either Sawyer or Betsy with the more defensive Christophe being kept on to help defend, and HRK also being kept on to give Sankofa a bit of cover as well as the already mentioned ability to make something out of nothing.

I thought Sawyer and Betsy both had quiet games in comparison to what we've been used to recently so either could have gone, but Sawyer was the right choice purely because of Betsy's experience, and the fact that he's also been booked a few times for some "reckless" tackles, and the way Kettle was going, he'd have been in danger himself. The booing was simply ignorant.

I think one point that people are missing is that Sawyer has yet to do 90 minutes for us (I think) and has been subbed in every game he has played for us thus far.

Floodlights? Pass.

BTW welcome back TTK where have you been when we have been winning? Your churlish whinge may have more credibility even if you had at least started a racing hot tip thread.

sawyer is indeed a massive talent, however after an hour or so he appears to run out of steam.

would imagine the reason he was hooked as others have explained was the simple fact the midfield was being over run.

Tony, why is it that you only post when we fail to win and you've got something to moan about? It really devalues anything you have to say. Why are you incapable of posting positive comments? Such a shame.

TTK re-appears after us not winning. There's a huge shock. Esp after Einstein's little fact earlier this week!
I wasn't surprised in the slightest to wake up to a moaning thread by TTK. I am quite surprised he hasn't called for Tilly's head though considering we didn't win. A fool of the highest order.

(And just in case anyone missed it - TTK has not made a single post since our last defeat. I did say lose here, should have been dropped points!! )

I was listening to all this "booing" nonsense on the 606 show last night, and hearing all the righteous Radio 5 Live presenters knocking England fans for booing Ashley Cole.

In the case of yesterday I dont think the fans were booing Tilson, they were just upset that by subbing one of your best players early it just brought home how Trevor Kettles decision had robbed us of our chance to win the game. No sooner did he get halfway to the line, all the fans initially booing started to applaud him, and then started singing to Macca. At the point of the sending off, I still thought we could win the game, even with 10 men, and was very disappointed to see Sawyer come off.

It would appear Tilson was right, however I thought we looked weaker for our lack of attack following the substitutions and didnt play well with 10 men as we have before.

Couldn't believe he took Sawyer off he was the only player who looked like he could create/score a goal for us. Crazy decision.

If he was going to bring on Sankofa, I would have taken off Barnard and left Revell up top as I feel that Rev's would have done far more chasing down then Barnard - Not that Barnard wouldn't I just think Revell would do more.

Why are people getting so upset.

Tilly made 2 substitutions in about 3 minutes.

Sankofa for Sawyer and Macca for Revell.

If it had been Sankofa for Revell and Macca for Sawyer, nobody would of booed at all.

Tilly made the right decisions for the team overall, just the wrong way round for the morons that support us.

Shame Sawyer wasn't subbed a few minutes before when we were 1-0 up,a change for Macca when perhaps a bit of meat with the gravy could've won us the game.

Think it was frustrating to have ourselves in the position where someone had to come off, but can plainly see that christophe would be kept instead of him in the centre

I have a hunch tillys taking sawyer off early so that other teams don't see too much of him.. otherwise news might reach chelsea and they'd want him back! :)

Agree. At the time I thought it was a bad move, but on reflection, whilst walking back to the car I thought/think it was the most sensible option.

Good job i'm not the manager!

For me Sawyer was the most obvious player to take off. We only had 3 defenders on the pitch so needed to bring Sankofa on asap and Christophe offers a lot of defensive support.

Our record when going down to 10 men is very poor (remember Brighton?) so to hold on for a point against a good Stockport side was in the end a good result.

TTK -its easy to criticise, so who would you have subbed?

In the case of yesterday I dont think the fans were booing Tilson, they were just upset that by subbing one of your best players early

I beg to differ, in the East you could see people standing up and directing their vitriol at the bench calling Tilson every name under the sun.
