Sturrock opens talks with JP Kalala

It was already going a pace last night on the 'Transfers in and out (from a reliable source)' thread. This was following a post from newbie, Nigel Blue, who claimed he had information that a player 'on big wages' was going to exit after the Ipswich match. He was to later confirm that this player was Anthony Grant.

Well he is very Grant like- combative, tough tackling but can get forward too. After googling him I saw he once got 14 bookings in one season with Yeovil. Also seems he was highly regarded by most of his former clubs- Brizzle Rovers fans sad to see him go last season and a popular player at Yeovil too.

Does anyone know how well he played against Braintree? I guess he was surrounded by yoofs, so may not have been an ideal platform to judge.

Like you say , its hard to judge in a team of yoofs and trialists but I thought he did ok - he was certainly the only one of the trialists I would have another look at from that night (excepting Leonard will sign anyway).

As James says above. He was the best trialist without doubt.

He get's up well for a little ish bloke.

Very, very vocal and was always talking & encouraging his team mates.

A fiery looking character.

Likes a challenge.

He won't score many, but that is not his game. I think he would be a very useful addition at this level and will provide some decent protection for the back four. He will probably be suspended quite a bit though!

Don't know whether I'm alone here but the thing I'm feeling rather curious about is the signing of Leonard. I felt that he had done enough to earn a contract, even before Braintree. PS in all his comments has been enthusiastic about him and Leonard sounds so keen to sign that you believe he would play for next to nothing...............SO WHY NO NEWS?
Could it be that there is a self imposed embargo on anymore signings, put in place by TB, until someone is shipped out? Is it too cynical to suggest that, following the Ipswich friendly, the bitter pill of Grant leaving will be sweetened by the signing of Leonard and perhaps Kalala?

Yer i thought he did okayy, didnt do anythingg special, but certainly didnt do anything wrong. Would definitly have taken a second look at him after wednesday night. Seems a good player and wouldnt mind him signing

This is a great point and something I've wondered myself to be honest. If both parties are so keen for Leonard to become a Southend player and money is surely not an issue on this one then why is it taking so long?

Well if he does sign, the Banana Splits theme tune is a shoe in as a song from him.

"Kalala lalalala Kalala lalalala" ad infinitum.

Doesnt take a genius to work out we need to ship 2 or 3 out before we can make any signings. Doubt if Leonard has even been offered anything. Most of it is just paper talk. The players we released were on peanuts most likely, I doubt Harris and JJ signed for a low wage so we are probably already over budget. Add in season ticket sales being down and I think Grant and Pato at the very least will have to be sold.

Dont forget Easton will have been on decent money- suspect we are not to much over last year currently but certainly Pato wages would give the headroom for that elusive forward.

Don't we also have to keep within a cap?- however that works may influence the timing of contracts for the like's of Leonard but not the if. Suspect the lad knows he's signing and thats why he's stayed on and playing all the games.

Could be nothing but Ricky Duncan on BBC
Southend United youth team coach Ricky Duncan says it would take a 'good offer' for the club to consider selling midfielder Kane Ferdinand
If Kalala is a relacement for anyone its Kane - but I still think we need two out and out defensive midfielders (and I dont think that is Grants best position)
