Streaming problems on Boxing Day

blues exile

First XI
The game was virtually unwatchable on DAZN because of condensation on the camera lens. Have the club been contacted about this to ascertain where the responsibility lies for ensuring equipment is in a fit state for broadcasting? Is the cameraman an employee of the club or DAZN? If the former, has the club addressed this issue to ensure it does not happen again? If the latter, will the club make an official complaint to DAZN?

You could see it on the highlights. It looked awful.

Response as below:

The issues were due to condensation inside the camera, we had heat warmers on the camera to prevent this happening which didn’t seem to be working as expected. It appears to have been a one-off.

I made a comment about this on YouTube and they responded: “As was stated in the description, we apologise for the camera quality which was out of our control”.

However I don’t buy this excuse and replied as follows:

“@sufcrootshall- out of your control? The weather is out of your control (it wasn’t bad on Boxing Day), but procuring the correct equipment for the job, training staff to operate it correctly and having a contingency back up plan in case of equipment failure is 100% within your control. We got the apology, but it’s a shame that the biggest win of the season in front of the biggest crowd of home fans for several years is not captured adequately for posterity because of a failure to plan and prepare a contingency for whatever the technical failure was on the day. I do not accept that this was out of your control.”

Frankly I find it embarrassing that a club of our size don’t have a contingency for such things - even if that’s an iPhone with a gimble or a tripod or a GoPro set up to face each half of the pitch to film the whole game to give footage that can be edited into the highlights later if/when there is a problem with the main camera.

The quality of the output from the media team has been top notch recently, but on this occasion they got things badly wrong - it wasn’t out of their control, they just didn’t control the controllable very well!

I can't comment @Shrimpergonzo To me, what they said, seems reasonable. I don't believe it's something we've had an issue with at Roots Hall, so, if it was something they hadn't used before, which didn't work, then isn't that understandable?

I don't know who actually sits up there filming the matches, or what their connection is with the media "team", but maybe there was no other option at short notice?

I get that, something failed that hasn’t failed before. However, I think it’s the lack of contingency for the failure that is disappointing. Hopefully they have learned the lesson now though and next time they will be better prepared to cope with it.

There are two aspects of dissatisfaction here. One, the obvious issue of the lens problem and the way it was dealt with and who is responsible, the club or DAZN. Two, DAZN's unacceptable response to requests for a refund in view of the unwatchable quality of their streaming.
