steve thompson

Remember his time with such fondness, he really pulled us out of the **** with some inspired tactics - going 4-3-3 and sticking Dublin up front was brilliant and we picked up some great wins. I think the 1-0 at Norwich with Gary Jones scoring was under Thompson wasnt it?

Anyways, was gutted when he left and surprised he couldnt translate his success with us elsewhere.

For going on such a great run in the equivalent of the Championship with Keith Dublin, Gary Jones and Tony Battersby up front.......the guy must have been a managerial genius!

Wasnt our form in those final games good enough for promotion? Tony Battersby! Christ... :D

The 1-0 win at Norwich definitely wasn't under him. That was a snowy Boxing Day with an orange ball. Thompson took over at the end of a season, probably in March some time.

His "genius" was in removing Keith Dublin from the defence. This automatically made us better defensively. Personally I think it would have been easier to just drop him, but sticking him up front had the same result for our defence. IIRC it was hoof Mickey Bodley who came in from the cold and formed a decent partnership with Eagle. With Chris Powell at left-back and Roycie in goal, that wasn't a bad defence - although I'm struggling to recall who was right-back. Surely it wasn't Hone?

Ronnie Whelan then getting fit again was a big factor and I think Tilly also returned after having been out of favour under Spud. I think God aka Phil Gridelet would have been the third midfielder.

Also it wasn't just donkeys up front, there was also Andy Thomson. It was Thommo, Gary "Off-side" Jones and then Battersby and then later Dublin.

Battersby scored a great goal on his debut.

Horrible day that, my Dad had a heart attack in the morning and insisted we went to the game anyway as he 'felt fine' - was a **** journey up there and back in the snow and couldnt really concentrate on the game.

Got back to the hospital all worried and he was like "well - did we win?" - thankfully he recovered ok!

must have been hone, he played 50 games in 2 seasons according to wikipedia - from 94 to 96, which covers the thompson period.

If he played 50 games in 2 seasons he must have missed a few games.

My guess is that those were likely to be the ones when we had a good spell.

Actually, I seem to recall Thompson giving the kids a go - Declan Perkins played a few games and did Danny Foot come in and play a game at right-back, possibly against Bolton or Sunderland?

Yea, I'm pretty sure it was Hone too.

I cannot believe that Thompson wasnt in charge for this game (but obviously he wasnt as the dates dont tally) - who was in charge? I'm **** with dates :(

Sorry, can't remember whether it was Spud or Whelan.

It was however my first ever away win:happy:

It was my 27th away game:'(

So I had a very different day to you, although I'm glad to hear your dad recovered.

This game was under Whelan believe it or not and I think we went 6th as a result, also the day that Lapper broke his leg.

I do remember the Thompson run with great fondness though, particularly successive wins away at Tranmere and Derby. Dublin wasn't up front all the time though as he definitely played right back at Tranmere but Thompson did a great job in transforming a very ordinary team into winning games regularly.

Webb
Murphy
Fry
Taylor
Thompson
Whelan
Martin
Little
Newman
Wignall
Tilson

and Gooding at various places.

Lining up like

Webb
Murphy Thompson Martin Fry
Taylor Whelan Little Tilson
Newman Wignall

Not sure Webb was a keeper, but Newman was obviously a legendary forward and Steve Wignall once scored for us (think he was playing for Aldershot at the time, mind)

Not bad, except Fry was a midfielder. Maybe a 3-5-2?

from fry himself:

Barry Fry

To sign for Manchester United, you must have been a decent player. Who’s the modern-day Barry Fry?
Stephen McCullagh, Gerrards Cross
I was an inside forward and I was a good player. I played for England schoolboys six times and scored five goals, including one at Wembley when we beat Scotland 5-3 in front of 93,000. I could have went pretty much anywhere, but I chose United because they invited me up there and Nobby Stiles looked after me and sold me the club brilliantly. Who was I like in the modern game? Midfielder bombing forward to score goals, good with either foot, quick, I could head it… I’d say Stevie Gerrard!
