Stepping up to the plate

Following on from i reply to a previous thread regarding our teams character or lack of it should i say, i was just interested to know how many players in our current squad you'd like to have beside you in the dark depths of a relegation dog fight.

Me personally could only call on arout 5 at a push

Barrett
macca
jcr ( small but the lad gives his all)
clarke
sodje ????

the rest just seem to go about there business on the pitch as though it was a friendly on to many occasions this season and it's no suprise we are where we are at the moment.

thoughts please

I think when the time is needed he can become one of the best keepers in this country.... ALA MAn U... just showed when our backs were against the wall defending for our lives Flavs character and class came out and pulled off some world class saves.

Thats where i'm coming from ? :)

If you're asking which of the players are actually Championship quality I would answer (excluding loanees)

Flavs
Hammill
Clarke
Spinner
Francis
Maher
Gower
JCR
Eastwood (if he can be bothered)

If you're asking which have the bottle for a fight I would answer

Barrett
Sodje
Francis
Clarke
Maher
McCormack
Bradders

Not a very long second list

yes i'm asking who is up for the fight and for me too many players are shying away from it at the moment .

take Hull for example , they brougfht in an over the hill , been there don it centre forward in Windass , who has experienced this type of scenario before and guess what ...........he has been nothing short of brillant for them .

What do we do , bring in a young forward with no reconised character and experience at this level and expect him to come in and perform miracles, it hasn't happened and tilly has to be the one to blame.

Too many players are hiding at present and we need 11 players willing to fight for this club not just 4 or 5 .

Maher surely should be in there also think that Flavs gives his all. Bradders, what he lacks on the pitch he makes up for in effort.

lack of quality and team spirit, these players are great role models and work hard but somehow unlike col ewe it hasn't clicked.

so why are we down where we are , i might be the only beleiving this but i don't think it is down to lack of quality
It is lack of experience that is why we are down here. Too many little mistakes and being our of position, which didn't hurt us last year as League 1 teams are unable to punish mistakes but Championship teams jump on them.
Also the Championship is much fitter and faster than League 1 which took us a long time to adjust to.
The reason we are where we are is nothing to do with the Hull or Colchester games, it is to do with the first half of the season where we were physically outfought and lost to set piece and team errors in front of goal.
It took us half a season to really get used to this league - if you take all the teams' performances since Janaury we would not be in relegation.

Good point about the physical and athletic side, sometimes i look at us up against other teams and it sometimes looks like men v boys, i think it may have took us by surprise the Fitness , strength and the general physical side to some of the players in the Championship.

it's always easier to base all thsi sort of thing on the last game but the last game was telling for me. It was a local derby againsta team not brilliant away from home and a real crunch game. How you can have McCormack in after that tepid performance I'm not sure. I can only pray that his rustiness was the result of the suspension.

Clarke, JCR and Bradbury if I had to pick three. All three of them tried their damnedest to take control of the match.

It's not about late tackles and shouting a lot (necessarily) but it is about making sure every minute on the pitch you are completely focussed and driven. Jcr was relentlessly hunting the ball when he came on but had precious little movement from his team-mates to work with.
