"Star In The Making" Says Ron

Ron Martin claimed today that new signing James Walker is a "Star in the making" after he agreed personall terms today.

I personally havent seen anythink of him and looking at his stats he doesnt seem to be all that. What do you guys think?

I think you know the answer to that one.
My question is though, was Tilly looking at him long-term or did he just impress him enough when he went to scout Yeovil in their midweek game last week?

I wish people on here would stop going on about his stats saying he only has scored 6 in 46 games.

If people were to look at the stats properly I would imagine that more than half of those 46 games were as substitute appearances, and all as a young 18-19 year old on loan away from home trying to make his way in the pro game.

Give the lad a chance, half of those six goals have been at Yeovil, where he has started 11 games (thats 10-12 goals a season), and he is only going to improve as he gets older, and plays more regularly.

Soccerbase has his stats as 7 in 35 (18 as sub)

http://www.soccerbase.com/players_details.sd?playerid=41745

This season 13 games 3 goals

20 years old - capped for England at youth level - experience of "real" league
football - obviously highly rated by a few -

I expect he was attracted by the reputation we have for being a good footballing club with a highly thought of manager -

prefer to spend the money on a potential young star, 20 yo, than have some jaded old pro like Owusu wearing the shirt -

I agree with the above about disregarding stat in some contexts. Seeing as he's not played a full season for anyone, is a youngster and has made a large number of sub appearances, you can't really give him a fair comparison to other more established players.

saw him play for Yeovil on Sky against Gillingham and he was the bext player on the park in awful conditions.

Whether he can perform consistantly is another thing. I for one didnt realise that he was on loan and was a bit pleased that he didnt line up for Yeovil on Saturday, only then to learn why!

Lets get behind the lad and give him a chance. If he turns out to be the next Paynter, it may be Tilly's last shout!

I haven't had a go at the move at all anywhere?
My only concern is has Tilly had his head turned a la Foran (remember the scouting missions up to Motherwell whilst on the trail of McDonald)!
A certain S Collymore probably had worse "stats2 when he joined Southend and look what he went on to achieve! I think it's a good move to be honest & one that excites me a whole lot more than the signings of Paynter, Harrold or Foran did!

I'm in the camp of not being worried about his stats. As people have already said he was on loan as a young lad for a handful of games with a lot as substitute. It would be interesting to see what Yeovil fans opinions of him were. I do hope that he is not the main striker signing though as signs show that Walker was signed for the future. Ron Martin's interview the other day suggests that him and Tilly are trying to bring in someone for in excess of the £200,000 paid for Walker. I'm sure I read on another thread that someone had some inside info that this target currently played for Bristol Rovers?

Fingers crossed for Rickie Lambert signing before our trip down to Dean Court saturday then

I have just check soccerbase for Stans Stats and it appears that the subsitute appearances in brackets are in addition to the full appearances

Stans stats btw were 6 starts

I'll just finish this......

7 Starts + 19 sub - Total 26

1 goal

Walkers reads 30 Starts 18 Sub (48 total - I guess the 46 does not include the 2 "other") 7 goals
