Squad Strengthening

Despite last week's two great results and our good league position I think it's time we added a couple of new faces to the squad. We know we have a small squad and a couple of injuries and inevitable suspensions and we're knackered. I recall getting in Steve Yates and Gerry Fell years ago to sustain our promotion push and I am sure Benjy joined us late on in 1990. The competition for places would be good even if they were loan deals.

I think we need to act now rather than be caught out later on.

So, who do we bring in, then?

Rooney and Owen

I think we could do with an experienced midfielder akin to Jay Smith who would be playng if he were fit. And really another "utility" player who could play anywhere at the back.

I just don't want us to get complacent.

Ryan Giggs isn't getting a regular game right now, we need a bit of creativity to unlock defences at home and he has loads of experience.

Also, Fredy Eastwood has shown some indifferent form just lately and I believe Thierry Henry will form a deadly partnership with Lawrie much more quickly and hopefully provide the sort of competitive spur for Fredy (such as Bart has for Darryl) to get him back to his best.

I'm not so sure these two are still available.

If we get to the final of the LDV AND if we've sustained or bettered our current position I'd like to think a couple of loan to perm players with funds released would be in the offing. We're lacking defensive cover and could do with a midfielder to keep Bents and Petts on their toes.

Alternatively we could get another keeper to silence the Bart vs Darryl debates.

Incidentally it was pleasing to glance at the PA's Current Bun this morning to see them giving Maher m-o-m.

I think that all supporters believe that their club's squad needs strengthening - but I do agree that one or two decent quality players coming in now would give us a bit of extra emphasis on getting automatic promotion. With a wedding coming up this year, I don't think two trips to Cardiff is in the budget this year ! !

If I remember correctly, when we were promoted from the old Third Division in 1990-91, didn't Keith Jones sign just before the transfer deadline and play an important role in the promotion push?

Keith Jones signed for The Blues in Sept/Oct time 1991. I think his first game was against Watford away which we won 2-1. He then scored his first blues goal in his very next game - a 4-2 zenith data systems defeat against Crystal Palace.

to replace the injured Peter Butler.

A Jamie Fullarton type player (without the injuries) would be good.

Yates was a wonderful left back and a great asset. Fell should have been left back (in the dressing room) and was a great plank. Mind you Fell did score a goal from nigh on the half way line for the reserves against Torquay. I enjoyed that one. Point is I agree that we need players but Tilly must get it right. One out of two is not going to help. Still, Tilly has not got it wrong yet when it comes to transfers, all those in and Dreweee out! I would be relieved to see some fresh reinforcements. As for Eastwood we have seen this before. I feel he is a star in the making. He came in with a big splash and the expectancy rose to unattainable heights. This is his first senior club and he did not get our pre-season under his belt which may well be telling. Give him a mo and he will come good again. Consistency normally goes hand in hand with experience.
