The Business
I know we have to get past Barnsley first which wont be easy but the Spurs draw should in theory be a massive draw for the club.

As a kid I remember when we got Everton away and I didnt sleep for a week before - The same for Sheffield Wednesday a season or two later.....

Yet now Spurs who are on a par with Everton & Sheff Wed in terms of clubs just dosent excite me at all. I will go for sure but its dosent inspire me.

In fairness only Liverpool,Chelsea or Arsenal would have done I guess. Am I just forgeting my roots as "little old Southend" or are we now on a new playing field?

Cheers

I'm with you on this one Dave.

I will of course support the boys, I'm even thinking of driving up to Barnsley with my mate, but I'm far more interested in our fight to stay in this league to be honest.

Really couldn't give a monkeys to be honest.

Overall there's no ties which sparkle with "the magic of the cup". I bet the BBC & Sky are struggling to pick any decent live games (although for some reason I bet QPR/Luton v Blackburn will get on - SSN were bigging it up last night, with Savage saying he believes Blackburn can do a UEFA/FA Cup double!!!)

Is the FA Cup now not the valued competition it once was? If so, blame Man Utd for the year they couldn't be bothered with it and other PL teams for utilising the cup for squad rotation purposes!

I'm up for it. Lots of my mates are Spurs fans and there's a few in the office as well. A win for them means nothing, but a win for us means bragging rights for about fifty years.

Is this a wind up ! come on, only two seasons ago we were at Boston on a Tuesday night......dreaming of making it to the third round.....Now we have a chance to play spurs at what has to be one of if not the best ground we have played at this season......no..... these are the glory years get used to the big games....

Neither are they!
Maybe Cardiff might produce a Swansea-esque performance and win at WHL to knock out "mighty" Spurs (there's not a 1 in the year so they're not due a Cup Final appearance)

If we had'nt played them in the carling cup then i'd be really up for us playing them subject to Barnsley and Cardiff both being defeated in the replays. However, as we have an extremely tough league game at Birmingham 3 days after the 4th round then i would prefer us going into that game totally fresh rather than somewhat fatigued following a hard game on probably a heavy pitch against spurs or the taffs. As for fans saying it's another good pay-day for the club, so what, it 's hardly likely the extra money will pursuade any player on Tilsons wanted list to come and join us.

obviously i would love to go to the lane and beat spurs and get revenge but with so many times queeing up this season i simply can't be arsed with it. if it was a few months until the game it would be brilliant but it hasn't been long since we were there in the carling cup.

not really too fussed about this really, all i want is to stay up!

Totally uninspired by the draw due to the fact that we've been denied our place in the next round following their goal which should have been disallowed. I don't fancy our chances of beating them up at their place, and at the moment don't really care. If we do go through then I will look forward to it.

Indeed. Steve Bruce was rubbing his hands in delight when we went to extra time against Spurs last time.

In my opinion, this is one of those times when "concentrate on the League" really is appropriate. We do not need the extra game against Barnsley, and while the money might be nice from a tie against Tottenham, we also don't need that game.

From here on in, all efforts need to be focused on gaining 7 points more than our relegation rivals!

Seems like the Scarborough situation all over again to me.

Main difference being that I was really keen to play Chelsea and quite expectant. Now I'm less expectant and less keen to play Spurs.

It would have been great to play them and take the creditable draw in normal time before moving on with the season. As it is, we may get a roasting.

All that said, there is the chance of an upset which, for me is one of the most exciting things about being a supporter. There is also a fat wad of cash to be made from even a 3/4 full White Hart Lane.

It's all conditional on beating Barnsley though and given our fairly dire record at Oakwell, I'm not holding too much hope!

I don't get the attitude from a lot of people on here. A big, local FA Cup tie on a saturday against opposition who wrongfully knocked us out of the Carling Cup just a few weeks ago. It doesn't get much bigger than that, surely?

As the clichéed viral e-mail states:

"Spurs must be Home and Away – delusions of greatness but always in the shadow of their more successful Neighbours."

It can be bigger and we've all got greedy!

I hear what you're saying Beefy but it's just one of those funny things, isn't it? I'm sure if we beat Barnsley, we'd sell out our allocation for White Hart Lane but I just know what I'd prefer to be celebrating at the end of the season.

Add that to the fact that we've already played Tottenham this season and the horrible journey out of London...

I'm sure we all know what we'd want to be celebrating at the end of the season. I don't think a couple more cup matches will do us any harm. If anything we need to be playing every week to get a rhythm. If we don't make the 4th Round won't we go 14 days without a game?

On a slightly different point, what set of players do you think will be more up for the replay at Barnsley?

After the manner in which Barnsley came back from the dead I thought they were strong favourites for the replay.

But I wonder will the draw (for the next round, rather than the result at Roots Hall) change things? Will our players take the attitude: of all the teams to get, not again. Or will they think they've got some unfinished business which will spur them on (excuse the pun) to win at Oakwell. I suppose the fact that half our midfield will fancy another trip to their old stomping ground works in our favour.
