Special mention to Spencer Prior tonight who I thought did superb at the back any comments?

It was entertaining to see the battle between Spinner and Dele Adebola. Two old veterans, both relishing the physical battle, cracking stuff.

dloman what game were you watching Hammell is the worst left back I have seen at the hall for many years, cant tackle and gets walked over every game.As for Spinner had a okay game until he gave away the penalty.

What the hell is wrong with you!!

Hammell is the best left back we have had at the hall in years, do you really think any of the left back we have had in the last 6/7 years are anywhere near as good a he is!!

Him and Francis both get forward so well to support our attacking play, they do more attacking than mopst of the midfield!!

Hammell is constantly breaking up the play and offering an easy pass!!

Superb player

Hammell has been a class signing.

As for Prior he had a great game... I thought that if Freddy didn't get the MotM then Prior should have.

Ahem, do you really think any of the recent left backs would have coped in the championship?

Clearly a championship player, still young, seen a bit of international play. Doing ok for us.

Really surprised to hear spinner played! But good job if he played well!

I think you'll find that Nic Nic was the worst left back we have seen at the hall in recent years

9 goals in 3 games and it could have been a lot more with out the goalie thats not very good

Not really. Hammell's only one of four defenders and offhand, I can't remember any of the goals coming down his side other than maybe Cardiff's third.

If I were you, I'd be more concerned aboutt he way that McKenzie rampaged down our right all second half rather than down our left where virtually nothing went. Perhaps you should also be aware of the gaping gap in the middle.

Anyway, we were much improved from previous games. Even from the Norwich game so hopefully we'll build on this.

Spinner was probably our best defender last night but I wouldn't say he was outstanding and he's too slow to be alongside Barrett. Barrett and Sodje should be our partnership when Efe's fit. Prior is good back up. I thought Hammell got beaten every time their right winger took him on. He's like Che in that he seems to struggle against pace.

Hammell looks good going forward but is vulnerable against real pace and quality. Same with Francis (but more so). It's not a good week to advocate 3-5-2, but I would like to see Sodje, Spinner and Barratt all playing to give those boys more cover when they go foward.

For what it's worth I am really disappointed with the defending abilities of both Hammell and Francis.

I am sure that they have potential but the fact is they both struggle everytime someone runs at them. Francis may be good going forward but their number one responsibility is to defend....and too often this season I've seen them outplayed. Their performances at QPR rank as the worst fullback performances from Southend players in recent times.

I would like to see Che given a try at left back. He may not be up to it but we won't find out unless he is given a go. I would also like to see Hunt at right back with JCR/Bradbury (when fit) in front of him. Thi should strengthen the defence.

I think every team in the country would tend to concede more goals without a goalie.

Except England.

Totally agree!

Hammell gets praise through his attacking ability and his dead ball deliveries, which I agree are impressive aspects of his game. I just wish he was as accomplished at defending. I think the same can be said for Francis. They are good players going forward but the fact is we are conceding far too many goals and this problem is not always down to the two centre backs.

Che Wilson now deserves a chance!

At least Prior tried to put in a tackle for their penalty - unlike the three players before him who just stood by and said 'there ya go mate'. I've been arguing for weeks that there is no better substitute for experience at this level and Friday night proved this. Now if we can just get Efe fit that's the centre of defence taking care of (AB lovers just need to count the goals against column). That's the first true shocker from Francis who deserves another chance but Hunt's ready to claim the spot as his own if needed.
