Spain

Not Shrimper news but has anyone else seen the pathetic £44,750 fine that the Spanish FA has been handed for the racist crap at the England game?

Utter joke. Expect to see more of it I guess then. How sad.

Yeah saw that. I don't really know what to make of fines in terms of racism at football matches. In business, fines are often used to try and offset the benefit gained but this really isn't the case. I certainly can't see that amount being a deterrent.

Then again, fines generally seem to be relative. Lazio, for instance, probably the sporting home of racism and unsporting conduct, got fined a fraction of Spain's amount, even considering their recent past. If you consider that racist allegations have been made against fans, players and cllub officials from Lazio, their fine looks even more paltry.

I think the Spain issue won't die quickly though and FIFA have certainly warned Spain. Still, I reckon if we'd been the guilty party in these events, we'd have been kicked out of the World Cup.

Pathetic.

Playing a few important matches behind closed doors would have been a fitting punishment, but FIFA wimped out again, like they do in any incident like this.
Unless it involves England, that is.

*Sighs, as Mr Wooly has posted this in the correct forum*

Yeah, 'cos the rascist abuse hurled at Turkish fans by English pr*cks during the England v Turkey match last year was "only a few kids mucking about" after all. Stones and glass houses springs to mind all of a sudden ...

Hey Mike don't get defensive. We know General Franco is no longer in charge.

Still I had to chuckle at Aragones who was trying to diffuse the ongoing row caused after he made a racial comment about Thierry Henry to Reyes earlier this season.

He told Spanish newspaper El Mundo: "Reyes is ethnically a gypsy. I have got a lot of gypsy and black friends."

He added: "All I did was to motivate the gypsy by telling him he was better than the black."
