Southends oldest fan meets Ben Coker

Ben Coker is a fantastic ambassador for the club. He does this sort of thing, along with hospital visits and talking to kids about their diabetes, giving advice and encouragement. A really good bloke. I can't wait to see him back playing for Southend.

He is believed to be the club's longest surviving supporter and lives at a care home in Colchester.

Christ, hasn't he suffered enough for 89 years?

As an ambassador for the club I would have liked to have seen Ben wearing some nice slacks and a smart roll neck rather than a tracksuit.

Good bloke!

I’ve got a few podcasts coming soon with ol’ cokes and I literally cannot wait to tell him how he’s attire is getting slated on the next one...

Great to see, well done Ben.

Some of you might recall that at the last game of last season we had Southend fan Ray Sorrell on the pitch with his long-time friend and ex Shrimper Tony Bentley. Ray has just passed his 91st birthday and when I saw him a month or two back at his Southend flat he was looking fighting fit. Ray treasures his day in the limelight last May, and hopes to get to a game or two soon. He was chuffed to be in touch recently with both the slightly younger Alan Moody and Derek Spence with whom he shares his birthday

Like 97 year old Arthur, Ray's first game was at The Kursaal. I'd love to know, bar maybe Cricko, whether there are any other Shrimper fans who saw us play there.

Ray was a referee assessor when I first started, indeed he did my first assessment. I noticed him watching the game, sadly, not mine. His assessment of my performance didn't really tally with what I'd done. A couple of weeks later my mate was assessed by him. When we compared assessments they were pretty much word for word identical.

Even so, he remembered both of us (and everyone he'd assessed) and was asking on our progress (or lack of) for many years afterwards. A really decent bloke, and I am pleased to see he is still with us.
