Southend vs Man Utd preview
Man Utd dangerman….errrr, take your pick!
In the red corner, boasting two European Cups, 15 League titles, 11 FA Cups, two League Cups and a Cup Winner’s Cup – Manchester United! And in the Blue Corner, with a record of one Division Four title and two LDV Vans Trophy Finals, it’s the reigning League One Champions – Southend United!
However, the two clubs have never actually played each other, so in head to head terms it’s 0-0 so far. Something has to give on Tuesday night and, let’s face it; it’s likely to be us. Although the Red Devils are certain to field a weakened line up as they so often do in the League Cup, only once in the last nine years have they lost to a team from a lower division (WBA in 2003/04).
And consider that by ‘weakened’ I mean ‘Rooney, Heinze, Ferdinand, Saha and Ronaldo will still be in the squad’, then you can appreciate the task facing the Shrimpers. The only Manchester United regulars not making the trip down for the first game of Alex Ferguson’s 21st year in charge will be Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Edwin van der Sar. No surprise then that the visitors are just 2/7 to win the game – in fact this could be your first ever opportunity to back Southend at 7/1 in a home game!
Southend, as we well know, are also on a woeful run. No Coca-Cola Championship wins since August 19th and a propensity to concede three goals in every single game. The League Cup has provided the club with some consolation – this is our first time in the last 16 – but team morale is at an all time low.
As for the Southend team, Tilson doesn’t really have too many options. Collis could come in for Flavs, who had a bit of a mare at Wolves on Saturday, but that seems unlikely. Elsewhere, one would hope that the experiment of playing Clarke in midfield will come to an end as this just isn’t working. Jamal Campbell-Ryce apparently had a good game at Molineux and could also be in line for a recall.
With a full house expected at Roots Hall, the Southend team should expect plenty of support, although it will be interesting to see just how many ‘Plastic Mancs’ will be sitting amongst the home fans. Hopefully all true Southend supporters will drown out whatever noise they make!
Up the Shrimpers!
