'Game to Remember' launched by Southend United for the first time - and it will become an annual event at Roots Hall.
Following on from last weekend’s events at football grounds around the country, to remember the remarkable 1914 Christmas Truce match that took place during World War I, Southend United have decided to hold their own remembrance event - ‘A Game to Remember’ - once a year to celebrate the lives of everyone connected with Southend United who has passed away in the last year.
Before the game against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday 10th January 2015, we will hold a minutes applause to remember those who have departed, and come together to celebrate their lives.
We therefore ask supporters to send us the names (first name and surname) of anyone connected, in any way, to Southend United who has passed away and we will put every name in the memorial programme and also scroll their name across the screen during the minutes applause.
Please send us a quick email to
commercial@southend-united.co.uk and we will collate all the names. The deadline for the submitted names will be Thursday 1st January 2015.
The intention is to have a ‘Game to Remember’ every year.
With Plymouth being the first home match in the New Year, we can come together as one family to remember them all. As this is the first time this has happened we will happily accept this year the names of those who have passed in earlier years as well.
Southend United Chief Executive Steve Kavanagh said: “Unfortunately we didn’t have a home game on Saturday 6th December, but historically we have held some fantastic events to represent those who have fallen for our country.
“It seemed the right time to bring in an annual event to give fans the chance to remember their loved ones as well. I am aware of a number of fans who have passed - many too early - and the staff have also suffered with the loss of loved ones.
“This is always a tough time of year when memories are hardest, so to have one game to remember everyone and celebrate all their lives will be a great way to start the year."
