Southend United's Ryan Leonard wants to build on win against Chesterfield

Sorry I just cant understand how leonard even plays pro football, no pace, poor distribution, not mobile, gets caught on the ball. I will say one thing he works hard, oh and has a long throw

Really?

He's looked rusty when coming back from injury, but when he's had games under his belt he's looked the part to me. I think he's one of Sturrock's more astute signings.

He's always understood his role in the side and by that I mean he knows where he needs to be, what man he needs to pick up. It's very rare to see him caught out of position. This is particularly impressive given how his role has constantly been changing - he's played all across the midfield, even up front - I think the only position he hasn't played is defence, and he was originally tagged as a defender. Good team player.

My only complaint is that he's been too injury prone. Otherwise he's the exact type of player you need when you talk about squad depth. When he's been fit he's come in and performed his job, not flashily, but he's done it and there hasn't been a drop off in results. If anything they may have improved. His last game back starting was Chesterfield where he came in and we stopped a run of 3 league defeats with a win. His game before that he came on as sub at Brentford and set up BBBC's equaliser with a peach of a cross.

Great vision, technical ability and movement. Has a very good footballing brain.

With Leonard in the side: P 27 W 15 D 5 L 7.

I'll take that, especially from a replacement.

Look at some of those defeats as well - two of those we played the best part of an hour with 10 men for (Oxford and Preston), Peterborough was against a team two divisions higher than us, Morecambe and Bradford were last minute defeats (and he was subbed at 0-0 in the Bradford game) and Swindon went on to be champions.

I like Leonard off the ball, but wouldn't mind him gradually improving what he does on the ball.

He's only 20, and so plenty of time for him to continue his development.

He was what gave us good balance last season and our form dropped when he got injured.

Not saying it was all down to him but he certainly helped.

Yep - same age as Woodyard but he's so far advanced of Woodyard people don't make the connection to even think of the comparison.

Woodyard's record is in contrast to Leonard's P 10 W 2 D 4 L 4.

Woodyard's 4 defeats have come against Burton, Stockport, Aldershot and Exeter. About the only mitigation I can come up with in those games is that we had a lot of players missing for that Stockport match (which is why he played) and Freddy missed a penalty v Aldershot.

Leonard did a very good job when we had Hall out on the other wing as always showed good discipline (something rare in a player so young and in-experienced!) ... Obviously not seen much of him since then and it'll be interesting to see how often he starts now he is fit again. Cant see him starting too many games as the midfield 4 will now be Hurst Laird Micky Timlin when all fit. Now id like to see him in the side with Hurst on the other side but that means pushing Timlin inside and we dont want to see that too often! And we all know Timlin never gets subbed (literally!) so i can see him starting in the occasional away game, but doubt we will see much of him at the Hall and bringing in Irish from Sheff Wed will hinder his chances too boot!

Kev

IIRC, it was Ryan Leonard who had the highest win percentage of all our players last season. As in, when he played, we generally tended to win far more games than we lost or drew.

Very good player both technically and mentally. With any luck these inner soles can help him put the injuries behind him, and he can start to progress the way he's promised to. It's very easy to forget he's only 20.

He reminds me of the Carl Pettefer, Lee Bradbury type playing in midfield. Not real wingers or any real ability to beat people for pace but solid particularly in defensive duties (something that the likes of Martin was not) and as someone else has said good vision and movement. But like others with a long throw that is all he seems to be known for (Herd, Delap etc).

It's just a shame for him that I think he bears a slight resemblance to Joey Barton! Mind you wouldn't mind him having his football ability (but not his ability to engage his brain before engaging his twitter account).
