Southend United's Phil Brown wants early contract talks with key players

Good news. Need to give Leonard a long deal as we did with Bentley.

Would be a good idea to sort out contracts with key players soon as possible,I would imagine the likes of Kevan Hurst may well have a few options open to him

Bit early for this, surely, given the state of modern football? I agree we don't want kids like Bentley running down their contracts, but the rest of football is just free transfers these days.

think you should look to keep your better players if only tp sell them on for a reasonable price. why I think Bentley is on a lengthy contract. the deals of Hurst and Leonard need sorting because they'll be free agents otherwise. don't want 2 good players potentially leaving for possibly nothing. need to allow as much time as possible to try and get them to commit. you never know we may get another season out of them.

Contracts are worthless these days. Players regularly leave clubs mid contract and the clubs rarely compensate small clubs like Southend. It was different in years gone by but no longer, sad to say. Players are happy to negotiate inflated wages and then take off if better deals come in from other clubs. Loyalty is rare these days, and not just in football.

While I agree that contracts can be seen as worthless, that only applies to the bigger teams. The only way a player with a contract can leave is if another club comes in for the player and pays the club for the player. Rarely do you see players in the bottom division move for money.

I don't get this "loyalty" arguement either. Although I wasn't around during the "good ol' days" when a player would apparently stick at a club and never leave, but can you really say that someone who is trying to earn a decent living and better themselves professional is them being disloyal? If someone offered you a much better salary and the chance to work at a bigger company, would you honestly say no?

Phil brown may want to sort things early doors.......ron however will have a very different view...mainly that of an insolvent wanna be property developer who cant even get his accounts signed off.
