The second of three consecutive home games sees Rochdale visit Roots Hall, and it gives us a chance to again test ourselves against play off contenders after the 3-1 victory against Halifax on Tuesday night.

Rochdale currently sit in 8th place, just outside the play-offs, and just a point ahead of us - although they’ve played 4 games fewer than us. If they won all their games in hand then they would be level on points with 4th place Oldham.

Their recent run of results is not that great, they lost on penalties to Wolves under-21s on Tuesday after a 2-2 draw in normal time in the pointless National League Cup, drew 0-0 in the National League with bottom placed Ebbsfleet last Saturday and lost 1-0 at home to Oldham the previous Tuesday. They have, however, (unlike us) progressed in the FA Trophy after beating Worthing in the previous round. They’re just below us in the form table.

Central Defender Jimmy McNulty, now 39, is their head coach after he was given a permanent contract as gaffer in May 2023 following a couple of spells as interim manager. He played 8 games for them last term but hasn’t featured as a player this season yet. They don’t appear to have any players in their squad at the moment with links to our club.

After the win on Tuesday night it would seem doubtful that Kev would tinker with the starting XI unless there are injuries that we don’t know about. Now that Nathan Harness has returned to MK Dons at the end of his loan, it remains to be seen if another ‘keeper will be brought in on loan to challenge Nick Hayes or if our Finnish International goalkeeping coach will continue to warm the bench and provide cover for now.

So who would you choose to start against The Dale, who will hopefully turn up with a better away kit option than Halifax, and what do you predict the result will be?

So, the second of 3 consecutive home games and an opportunity to get a Saturday win to lift the spirits. Let’s get behind the boys and you never know. A Tuesday win under the lights surely helped the mood.

I’d go unchanged if I was Kev, despite the temptation to bring Golding and LCP in. I liked the way Goodliffe grew into the match on Tuesday and his heading ability. Leon, another 30 mins running at tired defenders and seeing what the NL is about. Hopefully he’ll surprise them.
You’ll get “drop Bridge and Husin” but I think we’re actually better with them. Off the ball as well as on.
I think we should stick with the same front line too and Hopper and Kendall should be buzzing after hitting the target.

Just having Bridge on the pitch, pulling opposition players away from our forwards, makes a massive difference.

Nathan Ralph is a defender and that showed against Sittingbourne and Maidenhead when we really lacked a substantial attacking threat on that side. Bridge hasn't had the season he would have wanted, but it's like playing with a forward four with him on the pitch. From memory, Rochdale play with wingers so will be interesting to see how we set up.

Trains are a bit messy on Saturday :-

No trains between Liverpool Street and Shenfield

and

No trains between Laindon and Pitsea - So 4 trains an hour from Fenchurch Street via Lakeside and Grays with an odd timetable.

Aye, here's the rub.
Two decent performances back to back? It hasn't been our forté thus far, and I'd be interested, CP, whether the players now have a 'thing' about Saturdays, 3pm?
1-0 again please with a Walker miskick to win it!

Part of the perceived problem is the abuse that the players can receive when they make a mistake. At times I would imagine playing at home can be quite unpleasant for some. Roots Hall is a great place when things are going well, but quite the opposite when things aren't.

I sit in the West Block U and can’t recall hearing abuse aimed at the players.

Pretty unacceptable, but whereabouts do you sit and hear abuse?

In successive home games, in completely different stands, I've had the misfortune to sit a few rows in front of blokes screaming abuse at the top of their lungs whenever one of our players make a mistake. Not sure why they think it helps.

I don't think it's many doing it, but the ones that do tend to be the ones loud of voice and quiet of brain.
