Wanting new signings - Southend United boss Kevin Maher (Image: Matt Wilkinson/Focus Images Ltd)

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher has opened up on his search for new signings.

The Blues head coach has been frustrated in his attempts to add to his squad in recent weeks.

And, when asked about the prospect of any new signings, Maher said: "We've tried.

"We've got a transfer committee where we've got to get things and (sort) how it's going to work.

"Data will play a part in that as well so there's a lot of change around the place.

"We want to add at the right time."

Blues are believed to be keen on signing another defender and a striker.

Finally, a public mention of the "Money Ball" approach we are going with

This is all well and good, but from what I've heard about the budget, we won't be making any marquee signings for a while.

The committee is headed by someone with zero football knowledge and will only be looking at data (the data approach is quite normal nowadays) ... So unless JS puts forward a player that ticks every box, we are very much committed to the current squad.

For me ... This approach can work, it prevents managers like Brown, signing players he "likes" and destroying the budget for the next 3 years and as a result, leaving the next manager with his mess.

kev will want to strengthen his side and I think we can all agree, that if Kev had a top 6 squad (he currently DOES NOT!) We would be a serious contender for promotion / winning the league.

My worry is the lack of budget.

Yes the club needs to become more sustainable and the money we are currently loosing is genuinely sinking the ship. But being higher in the league brings more money. So I feel like there needs to be a little bit of speculate to accumulate.

We have the best manager in the league, the best fans in the league but we have a bottom 6 squad
I just hope the board see that before they get impatient with Kev and make a stupid decision

If money is available for additions to the squad, over reliance on data rather than personal assessment could scupper potential signings. I wonder just how much power on this issue has had to be ceded to the new director in order to secure his 'investment'?

No way do we have a bottom 6 squad. Play offs are on! 😀

Maher needs to be backed with signings...... are squad isn't good enough for where we should be aiming for. COSU had bit of excuse in the summer but now it's time for some ambition to be shown in the transfer window. Best supported club in the league with bottom half team! Not good enough lads.

Still should of signed jermaine Francis ages ago, could of got him for free last time I mentioned it, now he will cost a fee.

Anyone else feel like we’re running the risk of having too many chiefs?

Team is in dire need of improvement. Lets hope this new system isn’t going to stifle that.

Perhaps I sound old school but I wonder how many impressive players at our level in the past years would be picked up by this new data driven system?

Sometimes you know a player when you see one, rather than his numbers for the season.

There is no stopping the data/AI model which no doubt will dominate in the future but right now you wonder about the availability and efficacy of the data available at our level. Be interesting to see how this pans out. We maybe found the value of a network of old boys watching non league football matches a few years late. A bit like the blokes digging canals and seeing railways being built right next to them.

Money IS available for signings…

Absolutely it is.

My source who kept me updated through the sale process also confirmed that money is available to spend. Jan is key, because some, not all, of our targets are at league clubs and they do not want to release before they can be replaced, therefore why Jan transfer window is pivotal for us this season and supports Kev, when he repeatedly said losing the pre season due to the embargo running on later than expected hurt us more than the other clubs in the NL.
