Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 2, Dagenham & Redbridge 0

Evening Echo

The News
A CHANGE of competition signaled a change of fortune for Southend United tonight as they brushed aside Dagenham and Redbridge in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Roots Hall.

A good result and performance tonight. Heard Luggy on the radio afterwards saying that Prosser is playing through the pain barrier at the moment and it took a lot for him to be out there tonight. Barker also took a knock and Timlin had a gash to the head that he played through but he is hopeful they will all be fit for Saturday.

Another entertaining game which on another day could have been quite high scoring. We had two cleared off the line and they hit the bar with Smith making 3 or 4 excellent saves.

I hope the lads haven't worn themselves out for Saturday.

Ratings

Smith - 8.5 - MOM. Best match for us by some distance and would have been a 9 except for a comedy punch following a comedy attempted clearance by Prosser nearly causing a comedy goal as the ball landed on the top of the net. Some cracking saves though.

Clohessy - 7 - The usual, linked up well with Hurst and Tomlin.
Barker - 7 - Solid, took a knock near the end
Prosser - 8 - Some superb tackles and is playing through pain for the cause. PS said he was the sort of player you wanted in the squad and fair play to the lad, he is looking more and more assured every game. Benefiting from being alongside Cresswell.
Cresswell - 8. Opening goal, dominant at the back, Mr bloody Universe. How have we got him and why didn't Rotherham keep him? He is awesome.

Hurst - 7 - Good game, better delivery than on Saturday.
Timlin - 8 - Best game for a while, ran all over the pitch. I think it helped having Woodyard there who held his position well. Got kicked in the face, carried on with the run, put in an appalling cross (probably due to the blood in his eyes so he's forgiven there) and ran straight off for stitches and bandage. People need to give him some credit. I took one of my lads along for the first time in a year and he thought he was our stand out player.
Woodyard - 7 - held position well and definitely did enough to get a start. Showed his inexperience a couple of times but made some decent tackles and challenges.
Martin - 7.5 - Best game for us so far. Work rate good and unlucky not to score near the end as it was cleared off the line.

Tomlin - 6 - Didn't really work for him but his running and work rate was phenomenal. Just didn't keep the ball as well as he could have done.
Assombalonga - 7.5 - Gifted the goal which he couldn't miss but did really well running the channels and holding the ball up. Nice to see it played to his feet as well.

Ref - 8 - Let the game flow. One of the best we've had here for a long time.

Good point re: the ref. We are always on here in vast numbers slating the ref when we haven't seen things go our way, but on a night like tonight when the ref goes pretty much unnoticed, the ref rarely gets credit, decent performance tonight, and I say that with a view of the Daggers fans didn't seem hard done by at any stage either.

Smith: 7 Hot and cold, some decent saves, but still doesn't look confident, and distribution still lacks. Improving though.

Clohessy: 7 Standard competent performance, links well with Hurst.
Barker: 7 Improving on a very ropey start to the season, still gets caught out of position a little too often though, I think he forgets he's now left back.
Prosser: 8 Most improved player from last year. Defensively very sound, distribution is much better too.
Cresswell 9: MotM An absolute rock, wins almost everything in the air, and a constant threat up top too.

Hurst 8: Looking our most accomplished midfield player, looks a league above.
Martin 7: Getting back to his best form, probably should of scored, but always shows for the ball, and always supports the player on the ball.
Timlin 7.5: Everywhere. An engine, and seems to have cut out the Hollywood passes that saw him gift a lot of possession.
Woodyard 7: A good solid first half, did the simple things and provided Timmy with a solid midfield anchor. Faded quite a bit second half though.

Tomlin 6: Worked hard, but too often no end product, probably trying too hard against a former club.
Assomalongagagagagagaga: Runs himself into the ground, constantly causing the defenders grief by always being on their shoulders and making them worry. Deserved the goal on effort alone.

I'd agree about the ref too, considering I was quite apprehensive after Mick's ref watch. My only criticism was that he didn't penalise the oppo defence at all for their consistent mauling of Assombalonga.

Smith - 8, showed for the first time exactly what brought him to the Hall. A very good and confident performance, and unlike the Daggers' keeper, didn't feel the need to bawl at the players in front of him throughout the match - only time their keeper didn't shout was the mix up for the 2nd goal!
Clohessy - 7, usual Sean performance, playing some nice one touch stuff with Hurst
Cresswell - 8, absolute rock in defence and a power up top. I, too, would love to know why the fat **** let him go!
Prosser - 7, really solid performance, just one bad clearance that caused a bit of chaos
Barker - 7.5, absolutely beautiful pass through to Assombalonga early on, gets forward brilliantly now at left back, much better than in the middle
Hurst - 7.5, who needs Hall....much better corners and stronger, crosses sometimes a bit over-hit though
Timlin - 8.5 MOTM, just absolutely everywhere, his attitude to his injury said it all. Seemed much more confident actually having a decent partner
Woodyard - 7.5, based on the 1st half, as Wes said, he did fade in the 2nd. Showed that he's not scared to tackle unlike some
Martin - 8, thought he had his best game for us, some great runs and some excellent crossing
Tomlin - 7, needs a goal from open play and won't have a better chance than last night, shame he couldn't do it though
Assombalonga - 8, think he's absolutely brilliant, would love to sign him!

Ref - 8, welcome back another time on that performance!

Credit when due, we're all quick to slaughter the ref but last nights was the best this season by a long way.

Cresswell was superb AGAIN and for the 1st goal as soon as I saw it was Cresswell I knew it would end up in the net!

Timlin much improved last night and goes to show how much it helped having someone other than Spicer in the middle.

Couple of good saves by Smith, but agree still looks like lacking confidence. Which I suppose is understanable after the incident at Gillingham.

Heard a rumour fat fry was there last night checking on Britt. Anyone see him?

They are interested in Hall according to CP he could have been here because of that. However could certainly imagine people being interested in Britt.

I would bé interested to hear if any one who notmally thinks timlin is pants, thought he was pants last night.
Great match, end to end, on another day could have easeen a high scorring draw, they had a lot of good chances in the latter second half, as did we.
Lots of very good performances but especially Prosser, Timlin, Cresswell and maybe Barker

Smith - 8.5 - His best game for us by far, looked confident and made about 4 great saves. Only down side was he didn't seem like he want to come off his line too much and I didn't hear him talking to the back four too much. Still a much better performance.

Clohessy - 7 – Usual performance from him. Also giving an option, decent in attack as well as defence.
Barker - 7 – Doing a great job at left back, put a great ball through for a goal scoring opportunity as well
Prosser - 8 – Had a really good game, won everything that he had to in the air, played through injury and make some quality tackles
Cresswell - 8.5 – What can you say about this guy, scares the hell out of the opposition, wins every single ball. Scored a great goal and just looks class. No idea why Rotherham let him go!!

Hurst - 7 – Thought he was a little quiet but done well, better deliveries as well.
Timlin – 7.5 Worked really hard all game long and kept them under pressure in the middle, took a nasty whack but it didn’t seem to bother him
Woodyard - 7 – had a really good first half, some decent tackles and some really tidy passing. 2nd half he panicked a little bit and did a few hoof balls flying high up in the air but all considering a decent performance
Martin – 6 – not keen on the bloke, shys away from too many tackles for me and seems to delay putting the ball in the box and when he does it always seems to hit the defender. That being said at least he got himself in two goal scoring positions yesterday although they were not hit with any conviction or power.

Tomlin - 6 – Like always he worked very hard but never really got the chance on goal that he deserves. Some really nice link up play with Britt at times
Assombalonga - 7.5 –Glad to see him get on the score sheet as his confidence grows with every goal. Some good link up play with Tomlin and ran his socks. Managed to get himself about 4 chances and came close a few times and deserved his goal with good instincts what with the mis-communication between their keeper and defender.

Cresswell - 8.5 – What can you say about this guy, scares the hell out of the opposition, wins every single ball. Scored a great goal and just looks class. No idea why Rotherham let him go!!

When a team lets a player go like that you have to question why, Evans obviously didnt rate him at all.

The fact he has been so good for us just makes it look like a strange decision on their part, he has been fantastic for us.

Have to agree with everyone that Cresswell was again a unit at the back. I think the reason they let him go was that injuries have let him down a lot plus they did bring in a few higher league CB's. Maybe Evans thought they would be better than him so he just let him go? Good business on our behalf though anyway.

Smith played his best game for us, again, most people mentioned this already. That save in the first half was something special. Still lacing confidence though. Doesn't come out for enough and also isn't very vocal. Can only imagine him getting better after that game though.

Woodyard had a decent game I thought and deserves another game after that. First half I thought he looked a very tidy player. Second half, too many hoofs but he did look like he was huffing and puffing towards the end so I'll let him off for his first game in over a year. All in all very pleasing for him.

Special mention to Prosser who again just keeps improving.

Good result and a better performance from the boys. Onwards and upwards. BBBC back for the weekend as well :winking:

Smith 9 - Pulled of 4 fantastic saves
Clohessey - 7 Solid but nothing spectacular
Barker - 7 Got forward well at times
Prosser - 8 Did well very vocal and loved it when he told the lino on the west side to foxtrot oscar under his breath
Cresswell - 9 MoM Outstanding player, thanks v much Mr Evans
Hurst - 7 Did well set piece delivery was good
Timlin - 7 Tenacious and passing was better than usual
Woodyard - 7 Did well for a first start in years.
Martin - 7 Lively, unlucky not to score
Tomlin - 7 Worked very hard but needs to start finding the back of the net soon
Britt - 7 Did well and i could of scored that one on a good day

Ref. First half 2 - awful Second Half 8 much better
West side lino - 1 awful

Smith - 8 - couple of decent saves, one flap
Clohessy - 7 - consistent/solid
Barker- 6- decent forward runs/passes, but left defenders exposed at times
Cresswell - 9 - amazing.
Prosser - 7 - decent enough
Hurst - 7 some good passing
Timlin - 7 OK, but some passes askew. Worked hard though
Woodyard - 7 kept it simple. unspectacular but sufficient
Martin - 7 needs a bit of confidence but getting there

On another football forum....Rotherham fans are surprised he has played so much for us, due to him apparently always being injured for them, yet he still played 38 games over a couple of seasons. Maybe this payed a part in letting him go.

Just looked him up on wiki, can't believe he is only 24!

Just saw this: http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11716/8155348/Cresswell-bemoans-Millers-exit

Thanks Evans!
