Post-Match Thread and Ratings Southend United 1, Crawley Town 0

Great team performance tonight.

Mohsni coming on was great, got in their faces, drew them into fouls and seemed to have learnt his lesson by walking away every time.

Moment of the night was Mohsni having 3 Crawley guys on him, he held them off, dragged the ball back, turned and went with it and got hacked down. Got up and trotted off after winning the foul, leaving Smith to get a booking. Good good stuff.

Defended really well tonight. However 2 poor pieces of goalkeeping from Morris nearly cost us, he is looking rather shaky at times this season.
Mark Phillips outstanding, no surprise that we have won all 3 games he has started and finished, a big if but if he stays fit for the majority of the season will be a big asset.
No doubt it was a red for me, not the worst challenge but it was a high foot. Shame as he had done well up till then.
Thought Grant was really fired up and had a great game, others were so-so- JJ and Harris in particular both ineffective up front.

Played some really nice football first 20-25 mins then started going route one to Dicko who is not good in the air and much better on the deck. Came under pressure a lot and seemed to panic and resort to the long ball too much. Fair to say we got away with it tonight, Crawleys finishing was appalling, but they passed the ball as well as any team in this division and really we should be looking to play that way too, as we certainly have the players capable.

Bad news if Sawyer, Harris and Dicko out for saturday. Would stick Bilel up front with Hall and Blair either side. Of course, Luggy may still look to do business tomorrow.

A last word for Steve Evans, the guy is a disgrace. Every manager gets annoyed from Alex Ferguson down to your local sunday league manager but to spend the whole game sarcastically applauding every decision, appealing for every ridiciculous penalty claim and constantly hurling abuse and heckling the ref, Im amazed he didnt get sent off. Him and his coaching staff should be ashamed, although at least one of the coaches had the decency to shake our players hands at the end, he was probably embarassed at Fatboys antics. For the sake of his own health, someone of his grotesque size needs to calm down or else he will suffer a heart attack.

Good win, even if we rode our luck, excorcised some demons with that i think.

The mentality that we can beat anyone in this league needs to take hold if we have any chance of promotion. Hopefully we can take this into the league. cut out the hoofball crap, and the players will get to know each other and gel more.

Great to hang on for win. Morris shaky wtf?? The low cross he could only get an outstretched hand on what should he have left it? The other poor keeping I dont know...maybe close range shot that hit him in face. Agree Philips done well, and Granty worked hard.

Good stuff.

For a change took advantage of the Platinum Suite offer and I must say that the hospitality was very good, hosted well be David Crown who is a top guy (and the scorer of my all time fav SUFC goal which I was sad enough to remind him about).

Nice to see too that the Directors Box seats are as cramped as the rest in the East Stand.

The Moshni effort was a highlight as said above.

And I pity any Crawley player. Having Evans and his fat monkey bawl mindless instructions at you all match must be a complete embarrassment. No one on the pitch paid any attention to them so I expect they must just block it out.

Good performance from the boys we dug in well for most of the 2nd half. I too thought Phillips was out star man he is looking a complete player. Grant worked his socks off thro the whole game thought Leonard had a good 1st half lots of promise from his opening halfs performance.
As for Evans i never have seen a more animated manager in all my years you really have to ask just why oh why do we bother with 4th officials as i lost count the amount of times he tried to make him back away from the pitch only for Evans to sarcastically applaude every decision given. He was also shouting at his players constantly to 'Ignore the ref'. The man is a complete W@^k£r and for all the good that Crawley have done in acheiving league status this man will bring a big big large shadow over their club.
It was funny how he and his assistant were so in tune with each other appealing every decision even when they were never and clearly not theirs to appeal. This i think is a product of winning so many games as by winning almost every thing does go your way and only now when things are not so easy does it have to register that the other side can get a decision or two as well !!!!!!

Very satisfying to beat moneybags Crawley and that disgrace of a manager Evans, though we rode our luck and Crawley were unlucky to lose given the chances they created. We started really well and put some good passing moves together, Leonard threatening with his excellent long range shots and Clohessy making some good runs down the right. Dickinson did well to win the penalty and then dispatched it calmly. Crawley came back into it though and had a few half chances, plus I thought they should have had a penalty when their player was tripped in the box towards the end of the first half.

In the second half Crawley continued to be on the front foot, they missed a tap-in after Morris fumbled a cross and Tubbs had a goal ruled out for offside. They passed the ball very well and we seemed to resort to long ball in the second half and struggled to create anything really. Leonard hit a powerful long-range shot which Kuipers tipped away but apart from that I can't remember us causing them many problems. Dickinson was then sent off, I couldn't be sure from where I was whether it was deserved, though from what I've heard apparently he was a bit unlucky. Then we went to 4-4-1 with Mohsni up front on his own and just hung on for the rest of the game. There were a few nervous moments, especially in injury time when they missed a glorious chance but shot over the bar, but we managed to grind out the win. I was very pleased with how we defended and the players were as ever fully committed and determined to get the win - that's two games in a row now we've managed to grind out a win and Mark Phillips' return must have something to do with it.

He was my man of the match, very solid in central defence and commanding in the air. Alongside Barker that's a formidable partnership, and Clohessy and Prosser also did well. Morris was a bit dodgy I thought, fumbling one shot which led to their offside goal and pushing out a low cross straight to one of their players. In midfield Grant played well, he looked up for it tonight and played in his trademark committed style, while Leonard was a real threat with his long-range shots. Harris didn't really get into the game before he got injured and Johnson again didn't make much of an impact. Overall I thought we were slightly fortunate with the chances Crawley missed but dug in well to get the win.

As for Steve Evans, I already disliked the man before but now he's surely my most-hated manager - his constant berating of the referee and sarcastic applauding when a decision went against him was pathetic and in stark contrast to Sturrock, who looked far more dignified on the touchline. It's amazing Evans wasn't sent off and Crawley's board should be ashamed of him for acting in that way. All of which makes the win extra satisfying

Overall a good performance, I thought Mark Phillips was quality at the back. Leonard had a good game, liking him!
Dickinson was winning a lot in the air and passed it well often with Harris before he hurt is groin. Felt the red card was harsh but I'm happy with 1-0.

When Mohsni came on he made up for 2 men. Running everywhere, showed skills, pace, passion, defended, attacked. Was nervous for most of the time when we had 10 men, but that made the team push more to keep the win. We looked like a team and I'm looking forward to Saturday.

Read about his stint as manager at Boston United manager, that should shed some light.

Very good tactical move by Sturrock. Mohsni very much proved his worth last night. He won every header, hassled for the ball, made the Crawley players play the ball when they didn't want to, held the ball up, his passing was sublime at times. Not long after he came on, he had the ball down the right, played a couple of neat interchanges with Leonard then played an exquisite curling ball with the outside of his foot into the path of Hall in the middle of the park. Mohsni was a pleasure to watch last night.

As people are saying, Phillips stood out for me. It's usually Barker that wins the plaudits, but Phillips was the pick last night

Smashed them first 25 minutes. As we seem to do!
Why can't we do it for 50 minutes or 70 minutes? Because if we do, there wont be a problem this season!

Nice to beat them after the game at their shed. Nice to play under floodlights that actually can be considered as lights!

Big Dicko completely invited the challenge for the penalty, and was a definite pen. Put it away very well and looked well 'appy after scoring.
I'm not sure how bad his ankles are but it seems to me that this really hinders his mobility when jumping to head the ball. He still won a fair amount in the air and was really impressed by him. Harsh red card IMO. He'll be very important for us this season! Not a bad interview after the game either, seems to have a brain cell or two!

I thought it was hilarious how EVERY decision except the sending off went our way. It honestly seemed like the whole world was against Crawley and Evans, (which they sort of are in a way)

Ryan Leonard had a couple of very good efforts (that geezer can strike a ball so well).
Mark Phillips was well solid.
Mohsni was skillful and creative when he came on, I prefer him at center back but the guy is too creative to play there!
Felt sorry for JJ who I hope keeps his head up and gets rid of those bloody nerves!
Everyone was okay and it was nice to see us digging in and defending!

PLEASE GET IT TO JJ's feet more often!

A bit too deep at times though and we just invited it, but ohwell, we dealt with it!

Steve Evans
The bloke is a disgrace, there is being passionate and then there is being just ever so slightly ridiculous. How embarrassing!
I really don't mind when managers want to actually be out on the pitch and not on the side line, but this was something else.
Should have been sent off to be honest! There's nothing wrong with a bit of passion from a manager on the side line, but what he was doing was very strange. Much to the amusement of Coughlan and Sturrock who had a few laughs about it!
I have never ever seen a player look so confused as Luke Prosser was, Luke was actually looking at Evans with his mouth wide open and his eye balls popping out of his head! Sort of summed it up really it was ridiculous!

Funny to beat them with so many decisions going our way, and proves that we can match them. Lovely Jubbly!

just seen sending off on telly, never ever in a million years a red card, rewound it umpteen times cant see it myself
