for those that cant be bothered to read through the entire report this is what they said about us,
Southend United
There were no promotions to celebrate at Roots Hall between 1991 and 2004. There were, however, a couple of relegations.
At the end of the 1998-99 season, Southend were just six points away from dropping out of the league altogether, and between 1996 and 2004 they finished in the top half of the table only once.
But in recent seasons Southend have been transformed, and they can now be classed as over-achievers. Despite severe debts and employing six managers in seven years, they managed to achieve promotions in 2005 and 2006, and got over the disappointment of relegation in 2007 to reach the League One play-offs last term. Is this is a Premier League club in the making? We’d say No, but we’d have said the same thing about Hull City.
The only thing about that report that i don't quite get is the invest part. They say one section is based on:
• Changes in club ownership and associated investments
• Financial difficulties, including administration
Yet the top 5 teams in that list have all had major investment over the last few years.
Doncaster were taken over by a rich businessman if what i have heard is right. As were wigan and hull who have had major investment in the last few years. as for reading and portsmouth both were and still are owned by multi millionaires. I know a lot of this is about performance but to be honest if you are a fairly rich club you have a far greater chance of achieving stuff.
To be honest i think aldershot have been the biggest achievers since '92. Reformed that year 5 divisions below league football, and are now in the middle of league 1, bloody amazing!!!
I think 30th is a massive achievement for us though, to be fair though being the only team that have a 100% record against man united we should at least have been put above them in the table!
We are a traditionally small club, getting to the Championship in the early 90's was a massive over acheivement (which is why we got in such bad debt, ie wages we didn't have the infrastructure to support). In the last few years I feel our stock has risen, before we were a 4th tier club, I now think with the chairman we have, plus on the pitch acheivements we are a 3rd tier club on merit, although maybe one that on size you would expect to be lower in the table. With a new stadium on the way, our stock could rise futher, if we can grow and maintain higher attendances then maybe that could make us a championship club.

I'd forgotten how bad we were during that period! Really puts the recent success into context, esp when people start asking for Tilly out.
