In an idle moment (or six) I came up with these two teams, both playing in 3-5-2 formation. One is players who played for Southend and were from Scotland, and the other from the Rep. of Ireland. You may be able to come up with better teams, as some of the players, particularly Danny O'Shea, have been selected on tenuous grounds, i.e I t'ink he might have played for Ireland Youth when at Arsenal). All players are from the 70's, up to today.
Anyway which team do you think would win:
SCOTLAND
Leslie
Jupp McNally Jordan
Connelly McCormack Kellock Ferguson Cunningham
Thomson Best
Subs: Burns, Strachan, Shepherd
Manager: Dave Smith
REP. OF IRELAND
Peyton
O'Shea P. Scully Kelly
Byrne Maher Whelan Barry-Murphy O'Callaghan
Conlon Fitzpatrick
Subs: T. Scully, Foley, Perkins
Player Manager: Ronnie Whelan
I'd just go for Ireland, based on the defence and midfield. Up front, though, is a different matter. Scotland would edge it in the tactical acumen of the manager. 1-0 Ireland.
Tried a Welsh team, but could only think of 9 Welsh players we have had, and 4 of them are 'keepers.
