When asked if it was last month's defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League Final that was the main reason he wanted to leave Manchester United,Christiano Ronaldo allegedly replied :-
"To be honest,I've been wanting away for more than two years now and the tipping point was being knocked out of The Carling Cup in 2006 by Southend United."
"I still have nightmares about that night, like I say,it was a disaster from start to finish.Firstly, our coach driver chose the wrong entrance and we ended up in the main car park stuck and surrounded by Shrimpers fans.I swear I got the loudest boo when running to the entrance, nothing to do with getting my mate Wayne sent off in the England/Portugal match I'm sure!!"
"The atmosphere at Roots Hall was great, much better than Old Trafford and the fans are so close and passionate with not a prawn sandwich to be seen!!That night I discovered what real support was all about."
"The Southend players were all brilliant, but I must give special mention to their back four, who defended as if their lives were on the line.Like I say,on the odd occasion we broke through the defence, there was Flahavan to pull off world class saves! And what a goal by Freddy. He sure taught me how to take a free kick."
"It was good to see Tilly and Brush come to our place the week before the Barcelona final, but despite their expert input,we weren't able to pull it off this time.Perhaps I was already thinking about The Bernabeu and how the atmosphere there will come close to that night at Roots Hall!!Like I say,it was good to see Steve again, who gave me a couple of useful English phrases for when I'm being interviewed!!"
