Something to watch

steveo

mine to stay the same please
Got a long plane flight due at the end of the summer and need something to watch on the ipad. Previously, thanks to recommendations from some on here, I watched The Wire and if i dont find anything else will probably watch the whole thing again. Other favourites have been Band of Brothers.
Any ideas folks?

The Sopranos is great if you liked The Wire (best show of all time)

Airport '79

The fourth Airport film may be the silliest of them all, as George Kennedy returns, this time co-piloting with Alain Delon. The plane is on its way to the Moscow Olympics, has a bomb on board, and gets fired upon with missiles that necessitate flying upside-down.

Sounds like my kind of film Cyril, good work.

The Pacific was good but I kept thinnking its not as good as B-o-B
Homeland - watched it all - brilliant.
Coincidetally a chap at work bought the whole series of Alo Alo an put it on his ipad to watch when travelling.
I remember atching Mind your language - not sure if it will still be funny or even if you can buy it.

I am possibly the only bloke in the world never to have watched a single Sopranos episode so that might be a good one to go with.

I'm pleased I've got Sky Atlantic and they have run The Sopranos from the start, it's well worth it.

I'd also recommend 24 if you haven't seen it.

Nah you ain't. I aint seen it either, not particularly wanting to.

I felt that about The Sopranos, it's more of a serial drama rather than a thriller, but it's unbelievably good. Honest.

Thats the problem though, eveything after the Wire is not as good.

As I was watching The Wire, it was always a source of regret that as every episode ended, that was one less new episode for me to watch.

But The Sopranos runs it a very close second. Get involved.

exactly how I felt. The Sopranos is different to The Wire, as is Homeland, Band of Brothers, West Wing, South Park etc etc etc. They're all great shows though.

The reason I think The Wire is the best TV ever is:
- the scope and depth of the story arcs are just phenomenal. Arcs can span a single episode, or across seasons or the whole series.
- the acting is completely first class, and uses few stars (although it made some) and often used underprivileged and local actors
- the direction and production is perfect
- the show does a pretty decent job of being fairly politics-neutral (it's not overtly right wing like 24 or Homeland (perhaps), or left-wing (like The West Wing). It portrays an unbiased view of a city, and everyone has a personality and flaws, whether they're cops, politicians, teachers or drug dealers.
- it isn't dumbed down, it makes you think and it doesn't take short cuts.

But there are still loads of shows that are massively entertaining, and sometimes it's good to watch something that is massively impressive and thought-provoking, and sometimes it's good to watch a South Park, or something like The Sopranos where it's a great character analysis.
