Quote[/b] (Matty the Shrimper @ Aug. 15 2004,00:34)]Apologies in advance for the spelling, grammar etc. I've just travelled to Rochdale and back so I'm nackered.
As I was at the game....
A number of players came over to clap the fans and the majority clapped back however a couple greeted the players with less than pleasant comments. I later spoke to one of the 'culprits' who was originally commenting on Broughtons lack of skill. I pointed out that he gave 110% and commented on the fact that I clap the players for their commitment to the club. Fair enough a lot of players did not perform to their optimum however they do not go out to lose and do want to win.
Lets put another spin on it....
If the players didn't come over to clap then these people would be moaning due to lack of commitment to the club. Remember players such as Belgrave rarely clapped the fans and look at the stick he took (and rightly so may I add).
Clapping at the start and end of the matches Isn't nessesarily a sign of congratulations or good play but a symbol of (sorry to use this word again) commitment. The fans clap the players as a sign of thanks for playing for our club and for the effort they put in and the players clap the fans for travelling and supporting the team.
So come on lads lets support the team for a while before really criticising. We've only had three games and theres loads of points to play for. So lets forget whats happened and really support the boys this saturday and even if it does go wrong let it get bad before it gets better.
So lets support the team and hopefully results will increase with the support.
Our players are professionals and whilst no one should be subjected to abusive language [not least by our own fans], most learn to ignore it or treat it with the contempt it deserves.
Everyone please consider this...
I have stated before that I am an advocater of attacking football being the best form of defence...
Well, I am beginning to think that maybe this isn't suitable for the teams we play in this division!!!
why? well I have noticed that Cheltenham, Lincoln and Rochdale [our three games so far] have all played with one tactic in common!, getting men behind the ball in numbers thus nullifying our attacking options!
Now this suggests to me that teams look at us as being an attacking threat!. Now, that may sound ridiculous to you given our present position, but I don't think that [except maybe Rochdale!] these teams would set out to pack their defence, unless they thought this was the case!
Tilson needs to look at a whole new strategy here, beginning with support in defence from the midfield, inviting the opposition forward and then hitting them with our pace down the wing, by counter attacking in numbers and keeping the ball on the ground for a change!
On a final note... emotionally, I am P*SSED OFF about today! I thought that after Tuesday's outstanding performance, we were going to be on a roll!, however this is Southend United we are talking about, so what can we expect?
Next Game - Cambridge United - C'MON YOU BLUES!
